Mariela and I (Tom) feel very fortunate to have met the members of Glasvegas during their time with the Baihuairi Waorani. We worked as "fixers" and translators during the creation, filming and recording of this joint Waorani/Glasvegas effort. It was such a fun experience and I think both sides "walked away differently"... but in a good way. It gives us hope for the future that such different cultures can come together, learn about each other, colaborate and have a good laugh in the meantime.
Hi Friends,
You might remember the crazy adventure we had in 2014 when the band dressed all in black visited an indigenous tribe in the Amazon Jungle… Who gets to do that?!! It’s by far one of the most extraordinary things we have ever done as a band. We spent a few days with the Baihuaeri Waorani/Huaorani People of Bameno who welcomed us into their village and educated us on their way of life. We showed them Irn Bru and the electric guitar. Together we collaborated on music and created a song called ‘Same Same’. It was our way of saying how we live so differently but are still very similar as human beings.
Ever since our visit we have kept in touch with our Ecuadorian friends who have lived harmoniously in the same area since before written history.. They are increasingly worried about how drilling for oil in and around their ancestral territory is getting worse, destroying the forest that gives them life and their way of life. They tell us that without their rainforest territory, they and the neighboring tribes who live in voluntary isolation (resisting all contact with the outside world) cannot survive.
As COP26 will be taking place in Glasgow from the 31st of October, we want to take this opportunity and support something that means a lot to us. This tribe, that took us in and showed us so much, are our friends. We want to give them a platform during the COP26 to explain what is happening to their home and to give them another space to share their truth. We feel that it is important that their voices are heard, especially on the decisions that will affect their lives so gravely.
You will mainly meet Penti and Javi, who will tell you about themselves, their family, their home and how the drilling for oil is impacting on them, their neighbouring tribes, the animals, plants and vegetation.

PS. Huaorani and Waorani are different spellings but have the same meaning. We are not referring to different tribes.
We look forward to introducing you to these amazing humans. GVx
