From the rooftop of Casona 1914, one of Quito’s most spectacular landmarks rises above the Historic Center: the Basílica del Voto Nacional, considered the largest neo-Gothic church in the Americas.
Designed by French architect Emilio Tarlier, the Basilica is one of Ecuador’s most remarkable architectural treasures. Look closely and you’ll discover one of its most unique details: instead of traditional European gargoyles, its exterior features animals inspired by Ecuadorian wildlife — including Galápagos tortoises, caimans, armadillos, monkeys and pumas.
And the experience doesn’t end at ground level. Visitors can climb through the Basilica’s towers, crossing elevated walkways and steep staircases to reach the upper sections and the spires, where some of the most spectacular panoramic views of Quito await.

After sunset, the Basilica becomes part of Quito’s nighttime skyline, illuminated by an impressive architectural lighting system of around 900 LED lights.
And then there is the legend: the Basilica has never been considered completely finished, and local tradition says that when its construction is finally completed, Ecuador will cease to exist as a nation.
