This beauty visited me a few days ago!

Avicularia Purpurea
Also called the purple pinktoe, the Avicularia purpurea is a distinctive tarantula found in Ecuador. Though it looks black, under bright lights its coloration becomes a stunning deep purple. Though non-aggressive, the purple pinktoe is very skittish and moves quite fast. Adults reach sizes of up to 4.5 inches, and females may live to be 12 years old, compared to the male average of only 3 years. These spiders live and hunt off of the ground in trees, feeding on insects like flies, crickets, cockroaches and moths, and even occasionally small rodents.

We visited our friend Graci in Arozhuma. She adopted a peccary (also javelina or skunk pig) that was found at about 3 weeks old without its mother. It is extremly affectionate and follows her anywhere.
After enjoying lunch at their place we walked back down into the valley...

The fruit harvest 2018/19 was bigger than ever...I decided to sell some of our Zapote in the Friday whole sale market in our area. That is the market where retailers buy the goods that they sell at the local Sunday markets...
It is 5.30 in the morning and pitch black when I start the car to drive to the area where the market takes place. A guard tops me at the entrance, shines a bright light in my face and asks me why I am here (foreigners are not part of the crowd these people are used to see). When I point to the three huge bags in my trunk and tell him that I am here to sell Zapote, his face brakes into a big smile and he waves me through.
I drive down a steep hill to where people put their merchandise onto a big deck to sell. A "cargador" helps me unload. I stand in the midst of all these people that have been selling and dealing since their childhood! Not only do I stand out - I was sure everybody could tell that I had not done this too many times before!
I try to listen in on peoples conversations to get an idea of the price I could ask for my fruit...After walking around for a while I realize that there is not too much Zapote offered that day. Good, I should be able to get a fairly good price...
The market opens shortly after 6am and the retailers come running down the hill - everybody wants to be first to get the best and start negotiating.
I was correct, the interest in what I had to sell was big and my three bags were sold in no time.
It was not so much about the $30 that I earned but the whole atmosphere, the business, the chatter and laughter are priceless!

In a lot of towns all over Ecuador you will come accross these little carts out of which people sell all kind a foods and beverages.Particularly famous are those carts that hold a miracle drink called "emolientes especiales". Usually sold early in the morning, these are drinks made out of Aloe Vera and all kind of different herbs such as uña de gato or chanca piedra. They are meant to clean your blood, help your liver detox and give you energy! Or maybe just help you face the day after a long night of "trago"...
In our town, Ronald has been earning a big part of his daily income producing and selling this concoction for the past 10 years. He learned the trade from his cousin. The drink is sold between 6am and 8am and most of the afternoon is used to prepare and boil teas, make sure he has all his ingredientes and organizing his Aloe Vera, that he gets just accross the border in Peru.
A plastic cup costs 50 cents and he makes up to $20 on a good day! Most his customers are regulars and all have their special additions and ways they want to have the drink prepared.
This hard working artist is part of this town - like the church.

Seen in Rio Coca bus station in Quito...
The average Ecuadorian toilet does not feature a toilet seat. Why? We still wonder but think that it was probably considered "common property" and people would just take them!
In this particular bathroom, we already lost the toilet seat but somebody wanted to make sure, the lid of the watertank would not suffer the same fate
