Looking for meaningful souvenirs from Cairo? Here are our 3 favorite spots in Downtown Cairo — just a short walk from Madina Hostel!
* Oum el Dounia means "Mother of the World", a nickname for Egypt, and is the name of a well-established handicraft store that's selling books, household, decor, and all kinds of creative items made of glass, leather, textile, you name it ... since 2004. It's our favorite because you can find divers options of high quality. It is located at 3 Talaat Harb Street (1st floor) and is open daily from 10 AM to 9 PM.
* Access Art Space (formerly Townhouse Gallery) supports artistic work through exhibitions, residencies for artists and curators, educational initiatives. You can find amazing art by Egyptian artists and smaller items to take back home. It's definitely worth the experience visiting this space and enjoy the exhibitions! Open Saturday - Wednesday from 12-9pm at 10 El Nabarawy St.
* Lehnert and Landrock is one of Downtown Cairo’s most iconic and historic shops, known for its legacy in photography, books, and oriental art. Founded in 1904 by Rudolf Lehnert (a photographer from Austria) and Ernst Landrock (a bookseller from Germany), the store originally focused on photography and oriental imagery, capturing the landscapes, architecture, and people of North Africa and Egypt. Nowadays the store is on 36, Abd el-Khalik Tharwat Street (1st floor) operating Mon-Fri10am-5pm and Sat-Sun 10am-7pm. This shop is a cultural time capsule, preserving a century of visual history and storytelling about Egypt and the region.
