Highlights of Palestinian hospital development project:
1. Background:
a. History:
• Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) Egypt branch has been providing health services since 1980 through Palestine Hospital in Cairo.
• The Hospital was built in the early 1980s and is located at 64 El Thawra Street, Heliopolis, Cairo – Egypt.
b. Description of the premises:
• The hospital was built on a total plot area of 1,638 m2 and is comprised of a basement and a lower ground floor, an upper ground floor, plus six typical floors
• The approximate total built-up area of the building is approximately 5,700 m2.
• The hospital comprises an array of specialized clinics including cardiac catheterization unit, ICU, dialysis unit, gastrointestinal endoscopy unit, geriatrics section, physiotherapy section, x-ray section, pharmacy, medical lab for chemical, blood, microbiological and serological tests and a 24/7 emergency section.
2. Objective of the Project:
a. The intention of the project is to refurbish and upgrade the existing hospital facilities that would in turn lead to drastically improving patient and visitor experiences. The end result will benefit both the local community as well as the hospital’s stakeholders.
b. Archzone is to provide the design, engineering and construction supervision, including quantities, drawings and specifications for the required works.
c. To determine and resolve all existing essential issues in order to bring the hospital and its facilities up to modern day technological and functional standards.
3. Challenges:
a. To provide state-of-the-art engineering solutions that would ensure the optimal use of space, safety and durability in a specialized hospital setting.
b. Modernizing a currently functioning 50-year-old facility, and bringing it up to present-day architectural, structural, medical & MEP codes.
c. Creating practical designs and smart solutions that would minimize interruption to the Hospital’s regular operations during the implementation phase.
d. Doing all the above with minimal ‘as-built’ reference data.
