This week, a friend and I finally took a day trip to the New Administrative Capital – a place I had heard so many different opinions about over the years.
Yes, it’s a project that is often discussed critically, and I completely understand why people have questions about it. But I also believe some places are worth seeing with your own eyes before judging them.
Driving through the huge entrance gates, along the wide boulevards and past the monumental government and financial buildings felt like stepping into a completely different Egypt.
The highlight was the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, the largest church in the Middle East. Its scale, architecture and peaceful atmosphere were truly impressive.
On the way back we made a stop in Madinaty, where we enjoyed coffee by the landscaped water canals surrounded by gardens and palm trees, then continued through the beautiful historic district of Heliopolis, and finally ended the evening overlooking the Nile as Cairo slowly lit up after sunset.
Old Cairo, modern Cairo, green Cairo and the Cairo of tomorrow – all in one day.
