Our architecture begins with place.

Local limestone, naturally formed and rich with fossilized coral, clams, and mollusks, anchors Wadi Sabarah to its landscape and deep geological history.

Meet Dr. Irina.

With over 50 years working in Egypt’s Eastern Desert, Dr. Irina Springuel has become one of the region’s most knowledgeable experts on desert ecosystems and wild flora. Her work has supported major conservation efforts across Egypt – her book The Desert Garden is available in our library and in bookshops.

Our botanical garden was created in 2017 in cooperation with Dr. Irina, who spends most of her year at Wadi Sabarah.

“Growing indigenous plants, many of which are threatened species, would create small islands of wildlife, contributing to biodiversity protection in Egypt. A good example of a small wildlife paradise is the unique desert garden in Wadi Sabarah.”

Shahira Mehrez is a prominent Egyptian researcher, Islamic art expert, fashion designer, and cultural preservationist known for her extensive work documenting and promoting traditional Egyptian costumes, crafts, and heritage, especially through her book Costumes of Egypt: The Lost Legacies. She focuses on archiving heritage, becoming a leading voice in preserving disappearing traditions from regions like Sinai, Upper Egypt, and the Delta, connecting past aesthetics to present identity.

Our lodge has been a work in progress for over a decade. Built with repurposed fossilised coral limestone, Wadi Sabarah was designed in harmony with nature: applying vernacular architecture and academic research to reduce our environmental impact.
