Finca El Otero

Finca El Otero Bed and Breakfast in Aigües on the Costa Blanca in Spain. Ref CV-ARU000118-A Finca El Otero nestles high on a hill behind the town of Aigües.

The name Aigües comes from the Valencian word for water, situated on the Costa Blanca in Spain to the north of Alicante and west of Benidorm. The importance being that the heated spring water in the area contains medicinal compounds. The name of the town of Aigües dates back to the mid 13th century in the Almizra Treaty, the third in the series of three treaties between the crowns of Aragon and Ca

stile, the purpose to specifically define the borders of the Kingdom of Valencia. The town of Aigües was formally recognized centuries later as part of the province of Alicante. Aigües was owned by members of nobility and in some cases is still owned by those families today. The Moorish Tower and the Spa (currently not in operation) are two important land marks in Aigües. The Spa’s origins date back to 1816. It was constructed as a spa used by Aristocracy of the region. In 1936 the state took over the spa for treatment of children with tuberculosis. When the disease was finally defeated the spa in Aigües fell into disuse. Aigües is built on an elevated portion of the Cabezon de Oro which provides fantastic vantage points and views of the Mediterranean Sea. The natural vegetation is pine forest. There are also a number of natural springs nearby such as the Fountain of Cogolla. Within the town of Aigües, there are several sporting facilities. Some popular sports include football, indoor football, tennis, swimming and even a gymnastics area for those interested in aerobics. Golf course can be found nearby. The local festivities showcase the local culture such as the festival devoted to St Francis of Assisi, the Virgin of the Rosary as well as Christ of the Afflicted. These festivals are locally referred to as part of Schutzheiligenfest, celebrated yearly since the 19th century. Since the 1970s, processions of the Moors and Christians are performed during the first weekend of September. Another festival worth noting is the Feast of the Virgin del Carmen. Residents set off towards the shrine located in the pine forest where they hold a special mass and afterwards sit down to share a meal. The climate in Aigües is generally very hot and sun-drenched. The summers are beautiful and hot with balmy sunny winters. The location of Aigües is excellent in that there is easy access to the national road systems as well as public transportation. There are three airports in the region for you to choose from. From Aigües, Alicante airport to the south is the closest (approximately 37 kilometers / about half an hour drive). The next closest airport is San Javier Murcia also south of Aigües, which is approximately 120 km away (about one hour and 15 minutes drive). The furthest airport in the region is Valencia airport to the north (approximately one hour and 50 minutes drive / approximately 185 km). The rail system is very easily accessed through the Hub of Alicante. The closest access to the tram system is in the coastal town El Campello, a mere 15 minute drive from Aigües. The tram system stretches as far as Denia (north of Benidorm) to Alicante. The beauty of Aigües is that it is not situated in the hustle and bustle of the beach and city areas rather in a country setting with views of the Mediterranean coastline however the fantastic beaches are only a few kilometers away. The surrounding towns include Busot, Xixona, Villajoyosa, El Campello, Orxeta, Relleu, Torremanzanas and Sella.

The terrace baked in afternoon sun,
the olives shimmered silver-green,
while a shameless ginger cat
searched for the coolest spot he’d seen.
Not the fountain, not the shade,
not even the tiled floor—
he plunged his face in the ice bucket
and came back dripping, wanting more.
The sangria looked offended,
the ice cubes bobbed in disarray;
the cat licked his lips and seemed to say,
“This is how we survive summer, anyway.”

In the quiet corners of our guest house garden, time softens.
Morning begins here with the aroma of fresh coffee drifting through the leaves,
and evenings settle gently beside a chilled gin and tonic under the fading light.
A place to pause, to breathe, to linger a little longer.
Just you, the garden, and the simple luxury of stillness.
