🌴🌺 From Riversun Touristic, we wish you a Happy Canary Islands Day! 🌺🌴
As the first weekend of June approaches, we are thrilled to join in the celebration of Canary Islands Day, a cherished bank holiday throughout our beautiful archipelago.
On May 30th, 1983, the Canary Islands proudly became an Autonomous Region of Spain, with the Government of the Canary Islands Parliament convening for the first time. Since then, this day has been a vibrant celebration of Canarian culture across all eight islands and two provinces.
Expect a festive atmosphere in nearly every town and village, with locals dressed in traditional post-conquest attire, performing folk dances, and offering tastings of delicious local produce. This day is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the unique traditions and warm hospitality of the Canaries.
At Riversun Touristic, we are delighted to welcome our guests to experience not only our stunning beaches, luxurious hotels, and exciting leisure areas but also the rich and varied culture of our archipelago. Whether you are a local or a visitor, we invite you to join us in the festivities and create unforgettable memories.
Celebrate with us and embrace the spirit of the Canary Islands! 🎉✨

On the 6 of January “Arrival of the Three Kings” is a national holiday in Spain therefore a bank holiday.
The seasonal festivities reach their crescendo on January 6th with the arrival of Three Kings,” Los Reyes Magos” Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar, who now enjoy mythical, celebrity status, particularly among the children of Spain, as it is they who will bring gifts to those who have been good throughout the year. Those who have been naughty can expect little more than a lump of coal… or at least so they are told.
El día de los Reyes Magos, the day of the Kings, sees these three biblical wise men arrive to most towns and cities via a bewildering array of transports including everything from boats to parachutes to helicopters. They parade through the streets to the delight of the young and old and at the end of their journey, in most places, they are ceremoniously given the magic keys to the city or town by the local mayor or other VIPs.
Many towns have opted not to have camels anymore in their parades due to problems in recent years with their welfare and transport. The city of Las Palmas have been trying to find alternatives due to an accident involving the man who looks after the usual camels who do the job who is now unable to accompany these gentle but wary giants.
Las Palmas Gran Canaria traditionally has a colourful and beautiful celebration on the 5th or January. Festivities start at about 11 am in Santa Catalina Harbour, where the three kings arrive by boat. Later in the afternoon, a large procession led by three kings marches from Castillo de la Luz to San Telmo Park. It is a full day of activities planned, down near the port and also a massive parade, as do most of the other larger towns. Perhaps the most special of all is in the picturesque town of Agüimes, on the east side of Gran Canaria, where the entire community becomes a living theatre leading the audience through the streets to various live action scenes telling the story of the nativity and building toward the long awaited arrival of the Kings.

If you are going to be spending Christmas in the Canary Islands, you might be wondering what’s on. Of course, lying on the beach and sunbathing makes a nice change on Christmas day but what about Christmas Eve in the Canary Islands or Boxing day – what’s on and what’s going to be open?
Because Christmas week is one of the busiest weeks in the Canaries, nearly everything is open and that includes dolphin trip excursions, glass bottom boat excurions, Gran Canaria ferries to Puerto Rico, Mogan and Arguineguin, fishing trips and more.
There are usually a couple of small supermarkets open over Christmas if you want to buy supplies. December 24th in the evening is when the Canarians eat their traditional Christmas dinner.
In Spain Christmas Eve is called: Noche Buena - The good Night!

The family Christmas Eve meal is one of the most important meals of the year for a Spanish family and everyone will be busy preparing the traditional fare. It could be Turkey, but it is often fish.

As Christmas candy the Spaniards are eating "Turron" a kind of assorted chocolate, produced of among other things almonds and honey, or maybe marzipan. The meal will be complimented with champagne, and preferably the Spanish "Cava".

After the meal the adults will then exchange presents. The children will usually only receive a small gift. At midnight, some people will go to the Midnight Mass at the church. Others may stay at home and open a bottle of champagne to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Some children go Carol singing and the youngsters may go to bed whilst the adults go out and party until dawn.

Christmas Day is a fiesta day so all banks and shops are closed, probably to recover from the night before. Christmas Day in Spain is one of the quietest of the year. Anyone wanting to eat out on this special day will have to book well in advance.

The first major sign of Christmas is the state-run lottery which is drawn on December 22nd. The 'El Gordo' (the Fat One) is one of the largest lotteries in the world and thousands of people win each year.
In general, Christmas in Spain is based more on a religious theme than in many other places. Churches are packed to capacity, day and night.
Spain has many of its own unique traditions, all of which are great fun, but many of the Spanish traditions, are the same in the former Spanish colonies. In Spain there are many Christmas markets through December. Many parties are celebrated in the different cities during these markets.

Traditionally it is the Twelfth Night (the 6th of January), where the Holy 3 Kings - Los Reyes Magos ( Melchor, Gaspar and Balthazar ) that is bringing the gifts in Spain. It is namely on this day, that you'll receive your Christmas gifts, as a symbol on the arrival of the Holy Three Kings at the Crib of the Infant Jesus.

The evening before, the 5th of January, there are parades in most cities, where the Kings are riding through the cities on Camels, horses, donkeys or in decorated vans or busses. In the evening all the children place their footwear outside the door, before going to bed. The next morning the Holy 3 Kings have placed presents in them. The most bellowed is Balthazar.
In Spain, Santa Claus is called Papa Noel.

Weather in the Canary Islands at Christmas
Today it has been a pleasant 23ºC and it’s usually fairly warm over the Christmas week. So how are the Canaries over Xmas? Well it does vary and you ought to bring something with long sleeves. It might not be sunny everyday but it’s likely to be warm, probably between 20 and 25ºC so you should get some colour!
