Tensions are rising in Los Cristianos after residents and local officials were left out of a major port redevelopment project that could reshape the area.

The Plataforma contra la Ampliación del Puerto de Los Cristianos met with members of Ayuntamiento de Arona and mayor Fátima Lemes, raising concerns that neither community proposals nor the council’s input were included in the final project design.

According to the group’s president, Jorge Bello, the Autoridad Portuaria had previously promised a plan that would improve operations while preserving the identity and tourist appeal of the destination. What’s now on the table, they argue, does the opposite.

The current proposal is being criticised for focusing purely on port efficiency and economic gain, ignoring the social and environmental impact. Local officials themselves admitted “surprise” at the final design, calling it inefficient and warning it could “mortgage the future” of the municipality.

One of the biggest flashpoints is a planned large-scale parking structure near the port and along Avenida de La Habana. Critics say it would severely damage the visual landscape and worsen an already overloaded traffic situation. There’s also strong opposition to turning the avenue into a fast road by removing parking, pedestrian zones and green areas.

Concerns extend beyond the port itself. Questions were also raised about the long-delayed regeneration of Los Tarajales beach, with little clarity on timelines despite funding already being allocated.

Now, pressure is building. Residents are demanding a formal working group that includes all stakeholders and a clear, public stance from the local government. Plans are already underway for a public assembly later this month, with a protest expected between 6 and 7 June.

This is quickly turning into more than a local dispute. It’s becoming a test of how far development can go before it starts pushing residents out of the conversation.

Granadilla de Abona has announced free bus transport for residents travelling to Santa Cruz for the historic visit of Pope Leo XIV on June 12.

The Pope is expected to lead a huge open-air mass at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with thousands of people expected to travel from across the island.

To avoid traffic problems and parking chaos, Granadilla council says it will provide free guaguas for anyone wanting to attend.

The measure is designed to make the event more accessible for residents, especially older people and those with reduced mobility, while also helping reduce the number of private cars heading into the capital that day.

For now, the council is still working on the routes, schedules and exact departure points inside the municipality.

Registration is not open yet, but the local authority says all details will be announced over the next few weeks through its official website and social media channels.

With such a large crowd expected in Santa Cruz, this will probably be one of the easiest ways to attend one of the biggest events Tenerife has seen in years ⛪

This would be fantastic if it ever happens

The South Tenerife Train project is moving forward again… but it’s not done yet.

After years of delays and discussions, the next key step now depends on a final agreement with AENA to define how the railway will pass through Tenerife South Airport.

This isn’t a small detail. It’s the piece that unlocks everything else.

Once signed, the project can finally move into the environmental approval phase, something that has been holding it back for years.

The plan already includes an underground station at the airport, designed to connect directly with the terminal and future expansions. But with new redevelopment plans for the airport itself, both sides need to fully align before moving forward.

That’s why this agreement matters so much.

The first phase of the train would connect San Isidro to Costa Adeje, covering around 30 kilometres and linking key areas like Las Chafiras, the airport, Los Cristianos port and El Mojón hospital.

And here’s the part that gets attention…

Journey time for that stretch is estimated at just 13 minutes.

If it happens, it would completely change how people move around the south of the island.

But that’s the catch.

There’s still no confirmed date for the agreement, and until it’s signed, the project can’t officially progress.

So yes, Tenerife’s train is closer than before…
but it’s still waiting on one final green light.
