Since 1589, every August, Plaça Nova repeats the same gesture: honouring Sant Roc, the saint the Gothic Quarter once turned to for protection against the plague. Four centuries and one National Heritage designation later, the appointment still holds.
This year the festival's own icons are celebrating too — the giants Laieta and Roc have walked this same square for 120 years, and return this week freshly restored to their original 1906 colours. There's a quieter side to it as well: on Sunday morning, before any of the noise, the Goigs a Sant Roc are sung inside the Cathedral itself, before his own chapel.
Then night falls. The correfoc runs through the square in fire, drums and Gothic stone, with the Cathedral watching as it always has. Lamaro catches it from two angles — from L'Àtic, with the whole city behind it, or from Catedral 1951's own terrace, street-level.

Desde 1589, cada agosto, la plaça Nova repite el mismo gesto: honrar a Sant Roc, el santo al que el Barri Gòtic pidió protección contra la peste. Cuatro siglos y una declaración de Festa Patrimonial d'Interès Nacional después, la cita sigue intacta.
Este año los protagonistas cumplen aniversario propio: los gegants Laieta i Roc llevan 120 años saliendo a la misma plaza, y vuelven esta semana con la policromía original de 1906 recién recuperada. La fiesta tiene también su cara más recogida — el domingo, antes del ruido, se cantan los Goigs a Sant Roc dentro de la Catedral, ante su propia capella.
Y luego llega la noche: el correfoc cruza la plaza entre fuego, tambores y piedra gótica, con la Catedral como testigo de siempre. Lamaro lo ve de dos maneras — desde L'Àtic, con la ciudad entera de fondo, o desde la propia terraza de Catedral 1951, a ras de calle.
