Positive news for holiday-makers

Britain is making good progress with a plan to allow COVID-19 tests to cut a 14-day quarantine period for those returning from abroad, a change which could help fuel a travel recovery once current lockdowns end, the transport minister said.

Shapps said that rapid actual-flow tests for the coronavirus being trialled in Liverpool which give results in less than an hour should be seen as an optimistic development. “Ultimately it could open the way for non-quarantined air travel.”

The government was also working with partner countries to consider pre-departure quarantine and testing options that would end the need for quarantine upon arrival at destination, he said.

MADRID, 14 sep (Reuters) - El Gobierno español está considerando extender el programa de expedientes de regulación temporal de empleo (ERTE) —que suponen la suspensión temporal de los empleos y el pago de una prestación de desempleo a los trabajadores por el Estado— hasta el 2021, dijo el lunes la ministra de Trabajo Yolanda Díaz.

“La fecha esta abierta, probablemente esa (31 de diciembre) no sea la mas adecuada y tengamos que transitar hacia un poquito mas”, dijo Díaz en una entrevista en la televisión estatal española el lunes.

La ministra añadió que la extensión podría ser más larga para diferentes sectores. Dijo, por ejemplo, que el turismo se beneficiaría del programa siempre cuando lo necesiten.

Britain has secured access to up to 190 million doses of a potential coronavirus vaccine from Valneva in deal worth as much as 1.37 billion euros, the French-Austrian vaccine firm said Monday.

Britain will then have options on 40 million doses in 2022 and between 30 and 90 million across 2023 to 2025, which would cost 900 million euros.

It had already been disclosed in July that the British government had reserved 60 million doses of Valneva's inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine under development.

BERLÍN, 12 sep (Reuters) – La economía europea se está recuperando mucho mejor de lo que muchos temían al principio de la pandemia COVID-19, dijo el sábado el Ministro de Finanzas alemán Olaf Scholz, añadiendo que los gobiernos deberían, no obstante, seguir apoyando a las empresas y a los consumidores.

“La pandemia no ha terminado, pero los indicadores … muestran que la economía se está recuperando mucho mejor de lo que temíamos hace algún tiempo, y eso es algo que se aplica a la Unión Europea en su conjunto, pero también a cada uno de los Estados miembros”, dijo Scholz a los periodistas al final de una reunión informal de los 27 ministros de finanzas de la UE en Berlín.

European economy is recovering better than we had feared - Scholz

BERLIN (Reuters) - The European economy is recovering much better than many had feared at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said on Saturday, adding that governments should nonetheless continue to support companies and consumers.

"The pandemic is not over, but the indicators ... show that the economy is recovering much better than we feared some time ago, and that is something that applies to the European Union as a whole but also to the individual member states," Scholz told reporters at the end of an informal meeting of the 27 EU finance ministers in Berlin.
