The Alpujarras villages on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada were the last stronghold of the Moorish population after the fall of Granada in 1492.

The architecture of the villages, with flat-roofed white houses and timber-supported chimneys called tinaos spanning the narrow streets, preserves a building tradition that is more North African than Spanish.

Capileira, Bubion, and Trevelez are the most accessible of the high Alpujarra villages.

Those who walk the mulepath between Capileira and Bubion in the early morning when the light is in the gorge of the Poqueira valley below and the snow of the Sierra Nevada is visible above describe it as the most dramatically beautiful and most culturally distinctive village walk available anywhere in Andalucia.
