Immediately to the west lies the largest cork oak forest on the Mediterranean. The surroun

ding hills – the Serranía Ronda – and the river valleys are threaded by magnificent walks, with rock climbing nearby and a spectacular via ferrata in the village. The spring flowers start in January and get more gorgeous with each month. Our local mountain, El Hacho, is home to Griffon Vultures and many other birds, with nightingales and bee-eaters in the spring. The elegant city of Ronda is 45 minutes drive north along a spectacular mountain road; with Seville a further one-and-a-half hours away. Tarifa's famous surfing is just over an hour's drive to the south, with the ancient Roman port of Bolonia a little further along the coast. Entering the house from Barrio del Carmen, you come into the sitting room (with wood burning stove providing central heating throughout the house in winter) and a kitchen/dining room opening onto the garden steps and plunge pool. On the upper floor there is a landing/library with large screen for watching DVDs and playing games, a front twin bedroom, garden double bedroom and bathroom with bath and walk-in shower. Fans are provided for the hot summer months and all the windows and doors have traditional Spanish blinds. In warm weather the nicest place to relax and eat is the shaded roof terrace above with its lovely views.

The view of Morocco yesterday evening. The transcendent mood was heightened on the drive home, listening to Angela Hewitt on Composer of the Week , playing Beethoven's Apassionata and then talking about learning the Hammerklavier Sonata during lockdown. And, as she hasn't recorded it yet herself, asking Donald Macleod to play Paul Lewis's recording of the giant first movement. Wow!

Spain is reopening for foreigners and we still have some summer weeks unbooked at Casa Romero. Or, if you prefer cooler weather, think about a walking holiday in winter when we have these fine cloud inversions. This is the view from just above Gaucín, looking west to the Alcornocales – the biggest oak forest on the Mediterranean.
