Imagine falling in love with a space so hard that you buy it in ruins and camp among them til you figure out what happens next. That's what Mexican-Canadian chef Ernesto K*t Gomez did with an abandoned sugar cane hacienda in Todos Santos. "I wanted to be there to observe," he told us. "To live in the building’s draft. To feel the air. I spent two months camping there. Walking around the space and imagining what it would become."

What it became is Casa Melina. With the help of rising-star architect Yashar Yektajo, Gomez took inspiration from a towering cactus and Maria Ignacia Melina, the last surviving member of the Guaycura people, and built a tower under the stars.

We like our homes with a little backstory. And this is a great one. A traditional Yankee Ground Barn, it was built in 1839 by Asa P. Stone, then in 1929, the timber frame was lifted and moved 150 yards east to be used as living quarters. Today, it has been reborn yet again as a soaring, gabled living space, with hand-hewn beams and rafters, on a 120-acre apple orchard, five minutes from Crane Beach. Design choices aren't always convenient. We love this former olive mill in Corsica that was in a state of ruin when purchased. But, instead of demolishing the original structure, its new owners filled the crumbling shell with a contemporary core. Which you can now stay in.

Børge Ousland knows a thing or two about getting away from it all. An accomplished explorer, he has crossed the Patagonian Ice Fields, circumnavigated the North Pole in a trimaran, and trekked solo across both the Antarctic and the Arctic. In 2010, he started out on an altogether different adventure, with the purchase of a 55-acre island, Manshausen, in the Norwegian Arctic. And a few years later, he collaborated with architect Snorre Stinessen to create the Sea Cabins—a collection of modern pods that sit right on the water’s edge.

"The concept with the Sea Cabins is a mixture of a spaceship and a boat," he told us. "The spaceship as the cockpit where you are in the lead seat, with an unbroken view to the surroundings on three sides. A boat for function and minimalism. The architect Snorre Stinessen and I worked two years on this to get the concept right. I was probably a difficult client, but he is just so good and creative, and was always open and willing to listen to my ideas."
