PORTUGUESE MAN O’ WAR SPOTTED

Thank you to follower Mary, who reported a Portuguese Man o’ War (Carabela Portuguesa / Medusa Azul) yesterday around the old harbour area of Puerto de Mogán.

🌊 Important:
Where there is one, there are often more.
Please keep an eye on the water today, especially around rocky areas.

❌ Do not touch them, even if washed up on the beach.
❌ Keep children and pets away.
🚩 Watch for purple warning flags.

If stung:
✔ Rinse with seawater!
✔ Remove tentacles carefully with a card or towel
✔ Contact lifeguards immediately

⛪ POPE LEO XIV VISIT

The Pope’s visit is now only two days away.

There is still uncertainty regarding how severe the traffic disruption will be on Thursday as tens of thousands of people are expected to attend events in Las Palmas and around the Stadium.

I am currently collecting information from official sources only and will publish a separate travel advisory later today.

My advice at the moment:
🚗 If you do not absolutely need to travel on Thursday, stay in your resort and enjoy your holiday.

🚗 If you have flights, transfers or appointments, allow significantly more time than usual.

A new week begins in Puerto de Mogán, bringing another day of sunshine, warm temperatures and the simple pleasure of doing exactly what you feel like doing.

Whether today means a slow breakfast overlooking the marina, a morning swim, a walk through the village streets, or simply sitting with a coffee watching the world go by, as normal the weather is certainly on your side.

For me, the countdown continues. In just a couple of days my daughter arrives for her eight-week summer holiday. She was born here on Gran Canaria and although swimming and education have taken her to Norway, there will always be a little Moganera in her heart.

Prescription medicines, antibiotics, medical advice, paracetamol and ibuprofen are available here.

🌿 Parafarmacia / MEDICARE
These shops specialise in:
• Sunscreens
• Cosmetics
• Vitamins
• Supplements
• Wellness products

However, they cannot sell prescription medicines.

The two shops opposite Cordial Mogán Playa and behind the beachfront area (Medi-care) are Parafarmacias.

⛪ Pope Leo XIV’s historic visit remains the biggest story across Gran Canaria.

This will be the first papal visit to the Canary Islands in history.

The Pope arrives on Thursday 11th June and will visit Arguineguín, Vegueta and Las Palmas.

Significant traffic restrictions and security measures are expected, particularly around Arguineguín.

⚽ UD Las Palmas face a crucial promotion playoff match against Málaga on Wednesday evening.

After losing the first leg 1-0, they must overturn the deficit away from home to keep promotion hopes alive.

🚗 Emergency services responded to a serious head-on collision involving two commercial vehicles in Agüimes.

🚔 Four suspects have been arrested following a serious assault in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

🚀 Gran Canaria is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Maspalomas Space Station, an important part of the island’s role in international space tracking.

What a wonderful afternoon and evening yesterday in Mogán Pueblo.

The Romería of San Antonio El Chico once again showed just how important culture and tradition remain in this municipality. It was impressive to see so many people proudly wearing traditional Canarian clothing, with every family, village and group bringing their own colours and style to the celebration.

One of the highlights for me was meeting the famous Bailarines de Sabinosa from El Hierro.

Dressed in their striking white and red costumes with beautifully decorated hats, they danced through the streets accompanied by traditional pitos, chácaras and drums. They are among the most respected custodians of El Hierro’s folklore and have kept these traditions alive for generations.

I was even invited to visit El Hierro in 2029 for La Bajada de la Virgen de los Reyes, the island’s most important celebration, which takes place only once every four years. During this remarkable event, the Virgin is carried almost 29 kilometres across the island, accompanied by dancers from village to village in a tradition dating back hundreds of years.

The music continued late into the night, with the orchestra beginning at 00:30. I enjoyed a lovely meal from one of the food trucks and spent time simply taking in the atmosphere.

A truly memorable day and a reminder of how much heritage and community spirit mean to the people of Mogán.

Before anything else today, a quick reminder:

☀️ UV is expected to reach 12 today.

That is about as high as it gets and one of the strongest UV levels you’ll experience anywhere in Europe.

Please be very careful in the sun, especially between 12:00 and 15:00. Even people who visit regularly often underestimate how quickly the Canarian sun can burn.

At this level, unprotected skin can sustain cellular damage and burn in under 10 minutes. Strict, proactive sun safety measures: such as high SPF broad spectrum sunscreen, sun-protective clothing, and avoiding midday exposure are absolutely essential to prevent severe burns.

Now for the nicer news…

Today looks absolutely beautiful in Puerto de Mogán.

Blue skies, light winds, warm temperatures and a sea that looks very inviting. While many visitors will be enjoying the beach, today is also one of the most important traditional days of the year in Mogán Pueblo, where the annual Romería takes place.

And yes… my outfit is ready too 🤣

🍛 A LITTLE RESTAURANT TIP

Yesterday I had meal at NAMASTE Indian Restaurant on the beachfront.

There were six of us and for three it was their first visit.

The verdict?
Everyone wants to go back.

✔ Delicious food

✔ Reasonable prices

📉 TOURISM HEADLINES
You may have seen headlines suggesting “panic” in the Canary Islands after April tourism figures showed an 8.3% drop in international visitors compared with April last year.

Looking at the actual figures, the picture is much less dramatic.

🇬🇧 British tourism remains very stable.

The largest declines came from Germany and several Nordic countries, while visitors who did come actually spent more money per day than last year.

Personally, I would be very cautious about drawing major conclusions from one month of statistics.

Flight schedules, exchange rates and economic conditions can all influence individual months.

For Puerto de Mogán, it certainly doesn’t feel like tourism has disappeared.

📿 PAPAL VISIT TO GRAN CANARIA

Gran Canaria is preparing for a historic day on 11th June when Pope Leo XIV visits the island.

The Cabildo de Gran Canaria is asking residents and visitors to reduce non-essential travel, particularly on the GC-1 and GC-3, where temporary road closures will be in place as the papal convoy moves around the island.

📿 Mogán will present Pope Leo XIV with a handcrafted rosary made from Canarian pine and avocado wood.

The rosary has been created by local artisan Doramas Hernández and will be personally presented by Mayor Onalia Bueno during the Pope’s visit on 11th June.

Each of the 53 beads has been handcrafted and the piece reflects both the natural heritage and agricultural traditions of Mogán.

A very special local gift for a historic occasion.
