I have a confession to make.

After all these years in Puerto de Mogán, this was actually my first time eating at The Irish Tavern.

Why?

No good excuse really, apart from something that has always been in my head:

Why would I go to an Irish Tavern (I’m Norwegian) when I am in Gran Canaria?

Well, after Saturday evening I can answer my own question.

There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t. 😊

And perhaps, like me, you have walked past The Irish Tavern many times without realising quite what is behind the name.

🇮🇪🇮🇨 IRISH HOSPITALITY WITH CANARIAN ROOTS

The Irish Tavern has been part of Puerto de Mogán for a very long time.

Sandy and Javier have been welcoming guests here since 1997. Javier brings his Canarian roots while Sandy comes from Cork in Ireland, and I think that combination explains the place rather well.

It is family run, established and very personal.

And Sandy certainly knows how to run a restaurant.

She has drive, an eye for detail and is highly professional. She gives recommendations, keeps an eye on what is happening around her and makes sure you feel welcome and taken care of.

There is also very much a woman’s touch to the restaurant.

White tablecloths, candles, flowers and beautiful table settings give it a much softer and more intimate feeling than I had expected from somewhere called The Irish Tavern.

And then there is the location.

⚓ FIRST ROW ON THE MARINA

You really could not ask for much better.

The restaurant sits directly on the quayside in the marina, with the boats right in front of you.

The terrace is relatively small, which I actually liked. It makes the experience feel more intimate and personal, particularly as the evening begins and the candles are lit.

Sit back, watch people wander around the marina and enjoy one of the prettiest settings in Puerto de Mogán.

⭐ AND IT IS VERY POPULAR

This is certainly not a place that needs me to discover it for everyone else.

The Irish Tavern currently has 4.6 out of 5 on TripAdvisor from more than 730 reviews, is ranked No. 1 of six restaurants in Lomo Quiebre, and received a 2025 Travellers’ Choice Award.

Google shows an equally impressive 4.7 out of 5 from hundreds of reviews.

And there is something else that tells you a great deal about its popularity:

They are fully booked most evenings.

So please don’t assume you can simply turn up for dinner.

🍸 WE STARTED WITH SOMETHING PINK

There were five of us for dinner, and I started with their Special Pink, €10.50.

Gordon’s Pink Gin, hibiscus tonic and fresh strawberries.

Loved it! 🥰

The drinks menu is actually extensive. There are cocktails from around €8, mojitos and piña coladas at €9, Aperol and Limoncello Spritz at €8.50, sangria, wines and, naturally, Guinness.

Wine is reasonably priced too. Several bottles start at €18.50, with plenty of choices around €19.50 to €29.50.

🍽️ WE SKIPPED THE STARTERS FOR A VERY GOOD REASON…

We had seen the dessert board.

😂

And knowing that Sandy’s homemade desserts are something The Irish Tavern is particularly known for, we made the strategic decision to leave some room.

But if you do want a starter, the menu includes:

Hot bread with alioli, €3.90
Garlic bread, €3.90
Soup of the day, €7.50
Fresh chicken wings, €9.50
Homemade chicken liver pâté, €9.50
Smoked salmon, €12.50
Sizzling garlic prawns, €14.50

So there is plenty to choose from.

🥩 NOW TO MY FILLET STEAK…

I deliberately chose the Prime Fillet Steak, €26.50 because I had read so many positive comments about their steaks.

And yes.

Yummy!

Two of us at the table chose the fillet and I had mine with the blue cheese sauce.

That sauce…

Creamy, rich and absolutely delicious.

I am writing this the following morning and just thinking about it makes me want it again. 😂

My steak came with homemade chips and vegetables. What I particularly liked was that the vegetables and potatoes had that simple Canarian style I love.

Nothing unnecessarily complicated.

Just really good food.

And for €26.50 for a prime fillet steak with potatoes, seasonal vegetables and your choice of sauce, I think the price is very reasonable for the quality.

You can choose mushroom, green peppercorn, blue cheese, Béarnaise or garlic butter.

🍖🐟🦐 AND AROUND OUR TABLE…

Five people also meant I got a very good look at several different dishes.

We had the Irish Rack of Lamb, €29.50, served with mint sauce, potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

The Fresh Fillets of Sea Bass, €21.50, served with sweet potato purée, herb and garlic butter, sautéed potatoes and vegetables.

The King Prawns in Jameson Whiskey Sauce, €25.50, with basmati rice and vegetables.

And two of us had the Prime Fillet Steak.

Everyone loved their food.

The menu is actually far broader than I had expected.

You will also find Angus ribeye steak at €24.50, pan seared chicken fillet at €19.50, fish and chips at €19.50, Norwegian grilled salmon at €19.50, red king prawn scampi at €22.50 and a John Dory special at €19.50.

So again, forget any idea that this is simply somewhere to go for a pint.

It is very much a proper restaurant.

🍰 AND THEN CAME THE REASON WE SAVED ROOM

The desserts.

Oh my goodness.

Sandy makes the desserts herself, and they are an important part of what The Irish Tavern has become known for. Their own information describes a changing selection of home baked desserts available throughout the day.

I had the white chocolate cheesecake with coconut and raspberries.

It is to die for.

Seriously.

And around the table we also tried the sticky toffee pudding and fruit crumble.

Nobody regretted skipping the starter. 😂

If you love homemade puddings and desserts, I would go back for those alone.

☀️ YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL DINNER

This was something else I hadn’t really appreciated before visiting.

The Irish Tavern is also open during the daytime, so you can sit on the marina for a drink, cake or one of Sandy’s homemade desserts without having a full evening meal.

They also serve food at lunchtime on Fridays.

So even if you cannot get one of those very sought after evening reservations, there is still an opportunity to experience the setting during the day.

TripAdvisor currently lists Thursday as the closing day, as does the restaurant information available online.

Opening arrangements and food service can change, so particularly if you are planning your holiday around a visit, I would always check with them directly.

🌺 THE IRISH TAVERN

As you know, I call these Restaurant Presentations, not restaurant reviews.

I want to take you inside the restaurants of Puerto de Mogán, tell you a little about the people behind them, show you the menu and prices, share what we chose and tell you about my own experience.

And this time I also learned something myself.

For years, the name The Irish Tavern had somehow stopped me from going in.

Now?

I understand why so many people return year after year and why getting an evening table can be difficult.

A beautiful first row position on the marina.

A small and intimate terrace.

Sandy’s attention to detail.

Javier’s Canarian influence.

A fillet steak and blue cheese sauce I am still thinking about this morning.

And then that white chocolate cheesecake… 😍

As always, this is my personal experience from one visit. I recommend looking at Google and TripAdvisor too, reading other guests’ experiences and making up your own mind.

But I certainly won’t be able to use “Why should I go to an Irish Tavern in Gran Canaria?” as my excuse again.

I know the answer now. 🌺

Good morning from Puerto de Mogán 🌺

A new Monday and a fresh week are waiting for us.

We cannot always choose what happens around us, but we can choose which thoughts we give our energy to. Be gentle with yourself, look for the small good things and remember that even an ordinary Monday can become a lovely day. ☀️

Yesterday certainly gave me plenty to smile about.

I went down to the Mango and Avocado Fair at around one o’clock. There was local music, dancing, wonderful produce and a lovely atmosphere. It was so nice to see visitors and local people enjoying the day together and supporting the farmers, musicians and small businesses of Mogán. 🥭🥑🎶

Afterwards, we stopped at Berlin’s on the beachfront for a drink.

Did you know that they have a happy hour every day from 16:00 until 18:00?

It is a nice place to sit, watch village life pass by and give your feet a rest.

Later, we crossed over to the marina for dinner at a very popular restaurant. We had booked our table in advance, which I would definitely recommend, and the evening did not disappoint.

🌲 A VERY SPECIAL DAY FOR GRAN CANARIA

Today, 7th September, is the eve of the Feast of the Virgen del Pino, Our Lady of the Pine, and one of the most important dates in the Canarian calendar.

For generations, people from across Gran Canaria have travelled to the beautiful mountain town of Teror to honour the island’s patron saint.

According to tradition, an image of the Virgin Mary appeared in a pine tree in Teror in 1481. Over the centuries, the Virgen del Pino has become deeply connected to the history, faith and cultural identity of Gran Canaria.

Today’s celebrations include the colourful Romería Ofrenda, beginning at approximately 15:30. Each of Gran Canaria’s municipalities takes part with decorated carts, traditional Canarian clothing, music, dancing and offerings of local produce.

As evening arrives, the celebrations continue with music, busy streets and fireworks at midnight. 🎶🎆

🥾 THE WALK TO TEROR

One of the most meaningful traditions is to make the journey to Teror on foot.

Thousands of people walk along different routes from Las Palmas, Arucas, San Mateo and other parts of the island. For many Canarian families, El Camino a Teror is a tradition shared between generations.

If you are considering going, please understand that Teror will be extremely busy. Tens of thousands of people are expected, roads are being restricted and normal bus routes are affected.

Global has prepared around 200 buses for the special transport operation, which is expected to carry approximately 65,000 passengers.

The Teror bus station closes at 11:00 today, after which departures are transferred to Avenida del Cabildo.

Please do not try to drive into central Teror without checking the restrictions first. Public transport is strongly recommended, but expect long queues, crowds and delays.

📆 IMPORTANT FOR TOMORROW

Tuesday 8th September is the official Feast of the Virgen del Pino and a public holiday across Gran Canaria.

🏦 Banks and public offices will be closed.

🛍 Most ordinary shops and shopping centres outside the recognised tourist areas should also be expected to close.

If you were planning to travel to Las Palmas specifically for shopping tomorrow, I recommend choosing another day. Some restaurants, leisure facilities and individual businesses may open, but you must check directly before travelling.

Here in the southern tourist resorts, supermarkets, restaurants and other visitor services may remain open, sometimes with reduced holiday hours.

The Virgen del Pino celebrations are a beautiful reminder that Gran Canaria is much more than beaches and sunshine. Traditions like this are part of the island’s heart, connecting families, villages and generations. 🌲🇮🇨

It is going to be a very warm and sunny Monday in Puerto de Mogán.

🌡 Afternoon by the coast: around 31°C to 32°C
🌡 Evening: remaining very warm at around 29°C to 30°C
☀️ UV level: very high
🌊 Sea temperature: approximately 25°C
🌬 Light winds are expected around the beach

AEMET has issued an orange heat warning for the east, south and west of Gran Canaria.

Temperatures may reach approximately 37°C in inland areas and at higher elevations, with locally higher values possible. This does not necessarily mean that it will reach 37°C beside the beach in Puerto de Mogán, but it will still feel very hot here.

Please take the heat seriously today.

👒 Wear a hat and use plenty of sun protection
🌳 Look for shade during the hottest hours
🚶 Save longer walks for the morning or evening
👶 Take extra care with children
👵 Check on older family members and neighbours
🐾 Never leave animals in a parked car

If you are planning to walk up to El Mirador or explore the hills, please do it early. This is not the day for climbing 257 steps in the full afternoon sun.

The airport forecast indicates good visibility of 10 kilometres or more, with only a few clouds expected.

🌡 Afternoon temperature: approximately 29°C
💨 Strong northerly to north easterly winds are possible
💨 Gusts could reach approximately 34 knots

The wind may be noticeable, particularly during takeoff and landing, but please remember that only your airline can confirm the status of your individual flight.

If you are flying today, check your airline’s app or the AENA website before leaving Puerto de Mogán.

Passengers travelling to the United Kingdom or another destination outside the Schengen Area must pass through passport control after security in Area D.

Families travelling with children under 12 should use the manual passport control lanes. Allow enough time and do not wait until the last minute to go through.

If you are wondering what to do next weekend, La Marina Festival is returning to Playa El Perchel in Arguineguín.

There will be live music beside the sea, DJs, food trucks, Canarian wines and a wonderful mixture of local and international performers.

🎤 FRIDAY FROM 18:00

Friday is dedicated to the music of the 1990s, featuring Robin S., Culture Beat, Crossfire, Kenneth Shearman and DJs.

🎸 SATURDAY FROM 18:00

Saturday brings live pop and rock with Los Salvapantallas, Señor Natilla, Ash on Sax and DJs.

I am planning to go and see Los Salvapantallas. They are fantastic live and always create an atmosphere that makes people want to sing and dance. 💃🎶

🎷 SUNDAY FROM 17:00

Sunday begins with entertainment and activities for families, followed by soul and disco music from Cristina Ramos, the Gran Canaria Big Band, Arantza Navarro and a DJ.

🚍 GETTING THERE

Arguineguín is normally around 25 to 30 minutes from Puerto de Mogán by bus, depending on traffic.

Bus routes 1, 33 and 91 travel along this part of the coast. Please check the current Global timetable before travelling, particularly when planning your return late in the evening.

The festival takes place near Playa El Perchel. If you are unsure where to get off, send me a message and I can help with a map.

🚗 PARKING

Two official parking options are shown by the organisers:

🅿 P1: Outdoor parking at Plaza Negra, free of charge
🅿 P2: Public parking building in Arguineguín, paid parking

The festival is likely to be busy, so the bus may be the easiest choice if you want to enjoy the evening without worrying about your car.

Summer here is filled with fiestas, music and evenings spent outdoors. This festival could be a wonderful opportunity to experience a little more of local life beyond Puerto de Mogán. 🌴🎶

Good morning from Puerto de Mogán 🌺

Some Sundays begin slowly, with a long breakfast and absolutely no hurry.

Today will be rather different.

Puerto de Mogán is waking up earlier than usual as the Mango and Avocado Fair prepares to welcome visitors from across the island. But perhaps you have just arrived and are wondering where to buy milk, find a pharmacy or spend your first day.

So today’s update is about what you may actually need on a Sunday.

🥭 TODAY’S THE DAY

The IX Mango and Avocado Fair takes place today:

🕣 08:30 to 17:00
📍 Avenida de Los Marreros, close to Hotel Cordial
🎟️ Free entrance

You will find local fruit, food, crafts and music throughout the day.

I have shared all the details during the last few days, so I will not repeat them again. My only advice today is to visit early, use public transport if possible and enjoy seeing a different side of Mogán.

If crowds are not for you, the village will gradually become quieter again after the fair finishes at 17:00.

🛒 WHAT IS OPEN TODAY?

One of the most common questions on a Sunday is where to buy everyday essentials.

🌼 SPAR

Located close to the bus station.

🕗 Open today: 08:00 to 21:00

🌼 HIPERDINO

Located close to Cordial Mogán Valle.

🕘 Open today: 09:00 to 21:00

Both supermarkets sell water, fresh bread, fruit, dairy products, snacks and most everyday holiday essentials.

Have a look at the fresh counters for cheese, ham and cold meats. You can often find better quality and value than in the prepacked section.

Please remember that the supermarkets may be busier than usual today because of the fair.

💊 NEED A PHARMACY?

Spanish supermarkets do not sell medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. You need to visit a farmacia.

The Puerto de Mogán pharmacy is across the blue bridge, beside the small square.

🏖️ A SUNDAY ON PLAYA DE MOGÁN

If you are planning a beach day, today should bring more sunshine than we have seen recently.

The official beach forecast indicates:

🌡 Air temperature: approximately 31°C
🌊 Sea temperature: around 26°C
🌊 Sea conditions: Slight
💨 Light wind during the morning
💨 Moderate wind later in the day
☀️ UV: Very High

The beach currently offers:

💺 Sunbed: €3.50
⛱️ Umbrella: €3.50
💳 Payment: Card only

Do not worry if nobody comes to collect payment immediately. You do not have to stay beside your sunbed waiting. The attendant will come around and find you later.

Remember your beach shoes, as the sand can become extremely hot.

Always check the beach flag before entering the water.

☀️ PLEASE TAKE THE HEAT SERIOUSLY

An orange high temperature warning is expected for eastern, southern and western Gran Canaria.

Although temperatures beside the sea are forecast at around 31°C, some places away from the immediate coast may become considerably hotter.

If you are visiting the fair, walking around the village or spending the day on the beach:

💧 Drink water regularly
👒 Wear a hat
☀️ Apply a good SPF
🌳 Rest in the shade when necessary
👶 Take particular care with young children
🐾 Never leave animals inside parked cars

There is still some Saharan dust in the atmosphere. The nearby air quality reading from Arguineguín is currently moderate, so those with asthma or respiratory conditions should avoid unnecessary physical exertion if the air feels uncomfortable.

There is still plenty of daylight for an evening walk once the temperature begins to fall.

After such a busy day in the village, the marina should be a lovely place to slow down, find somewhere for dinner and watch the colours change across the water.

The latest aviation forecast indicates good general flying conditions, with visibility of 10 kilometres or more.

The airport is expected to become windier later today.

💨 Northerly winds may reach around 28 knots
💨 Temporary gusts of up to 38 knots are possible
🌡 Maximum airport temperature: approximately 30°C

Strong wind at the airport does not automatically mean that flights will be delayed or cancelled. Always check directly with your airline for information about your particular flight.

Passengers travelling to the United Kingdom and other destinations outside the Schengen Area must pass through passport control after security in Area D.

Families travelling with children under 12 should use the manual passport control lanes.

Please allow enough time, as queues can build quickly.

✈️ ARRIVING TODAY?

If your flight arrives before 22:00, there is a small SPAR supermarket inside the airport arrivals hall.

After collecting your luggage and walking through the sliding doors, look immediately to your right.

It is useful for picking up water, milk, breakfast items and a few essentials before travelling down to Puerto de Mogán.

Have you ever tasted a mango grown here in Mogán?

If you have, you will probably already understand why tomorrow’s Mango and Avocado Fair is about much more than buying fruit.

It is a celebration of our farmers, our valleys, our climate and an important part of Mogán that many visitors never see. 🌱

Behind the beaches, hotels and restaurants are fertile ravines where mangoes, avocados, pineapples, passion fruit and pitaya grow beneath the Canarian sun.

Tomorrow, that part of Mogán comes directly to Playa de Mogán.

🥭🥑 𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗥𝗢𝗪’𝗦 𝗙𝗔𝗜𝗥

📆 Sunday 6th September 2026
🕣 08:30 to 17:00
📍 Avenida de Los Marreros, Playa de Mogán

The fair has moved to the pedestrian promenade along Avenida de Los Marreros this year, close to Hotel Cordial.

Approximately 10,000 people attended last year, and even more visitors are expected tomorrow.

There will be:

👩‍🌾 17 stalls representing farmers from Veneguera, Mogán and Arguineguín
🎨 13 craft stalls
🍯 7 stalls offering locally prepared products
🍽️ 12 gastronomy stalls
🎶 Live entertainment throughout the day

And an extraordinary amount of locally grown fruit:

🥭 Approximately 5,000 kilos of mangoes
🥑 Approximately 4,500 kilos of avocados
🍍 Around 800 kilos of tropical pineapple
💜 Approximately 500 kilos of passion fruit
🐉 Almost 1,000 kilos of pitaya

You will also find honey, jams, cheese, bread and tapas prepared with mango and avocado.

🌱 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗥𝗨𝗜𝗧 𝗧𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘 𝗦𝗢 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗?

The deep ravines of Mogán have a warm subtropical microclimate, with abundant sunshine and protection provided by the surrounding mountains.

This creates excellent growing conditions for tropical fruit.

Fruit sold tomorrow has another very important advantage. It has not travelled thousands of miles before reaching you.

Imported mangoes often have to be picked firm enough to survive packing, transport and storage. Local fruit can remain on the tree longer and be harvested much closer to its ideal stage of ripeness.

That shorter journey from the farm to your shopping bag can mean:

🥭 A stronger natural aroma
🥭 A fuller and sweeter flavour
🥭 Juicier flesh
🥑 A creamy texture
🥑 Fruit sold at its natural seasonal best

Tomorrow you can also speak directly with some of the people who grow it. Ask them about the variety, when it will be ready to eat and how they recommend storing it.

That knowledge is part of what makes buying directly from a farmer so special.

🥭 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗘

Mogán produces different mango varieties, so do not choose one by colour alone.

One specialist farm in the municipality, Mogansol, grows three principal varieties:

🥭 𝗞𝗘𝗜𝗧𝗧

A large mango that can remain predominantly green even when it is ready to eat. It is sweet and juicy, so never reject a Keitt simply because it has not turned yellow or red.

🥭 𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗘𝗡

Recognisable by its purple and reddish colouring. Its flesh is smooth, creamy and almost free from fibres.

🥭 𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗬 𝗔𝗧𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗦

Usually more red in colour, with firm flesh and a balanced flavour. It also keeps well.

Other local growers may offer different varieties, which is another good reason to ask before buying.

👃 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗢 𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗢

Colour is not always an indication of ripeness.

Instead:

👃 Smell the mango gently near the stem. A ripe mango will normally have a sweet, fruity aroma.

🫳 Hold it carefully and press very gently. It should give slightly without feeling soft or mushy.

🌡️ If it is still firm, leave it at room temperature and allow it to ripen naturally.

❄️ Once it is ripe, place it in the fridge if you are not eating it immediately.

🧊 You can also peel and cut ripe mango into pieces and freeze it for smoothies, desserts or breakfast.

Please handle the fruit gently at the stalls. Pressing too firmly can bruise fruit that somebody else may later buy.

🥑 𝗠𝗢𝗚Á𝗡’S GREEN GOLD

Local avocados are sometimes described as Mogán’s green gold, and tomorrow’s fair celebrates the traditional summer varieties that thrive here.

Many visitors are most familiar with Hass avocados, which become darker as they ripen. However, other avocado varieties can remain beautifully green even when they are completely ready to eat.

Once again, colour does not tell the entire story.

🥑 Hold the avocado in your palm and apply very gentle pressure.

🥑 If it feels completely hard, leave it at room temperature.

🥑 If it gives slightly, it may be ready to eat.

🥑 If it feels very soft or leaves an indentation, it may already be overripe.

🥑 Once it reaches the ripeness you prefer, keeping it in the fridge will slow the process.

If you only use half, cover the exposed flesh closely and add a little lemon or lime juice to help reduce browning.

🌺 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗘

Mogán may be internationally known as a holiday destination, but agriculture has been part of life here for generations.

Tomorrow’s fair helps preserve and celebrate that connection.

Every mango, avocado and passion fruit represents someone planting, watering, protecting, harvesting and carrying that produce from the valley to the fair.

Buying directly from the farmers supports local agriculture and helps keep these traditions alive.

It also gives us an opportunity to taste Mogán rather than simply visit it. 🌱

☀️ 𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗚𝗢

Tomorrow is expected to be extremely warm, and an official heat prealert is in place.

My advice is to arrive as close to 08:30 as possible.

Remember to bring:

👒 A hat
☀️ Plenty of sun protection
💧 Drinking water
👟 Comfortable shoes
🛍️ A strong reusable bag
💶 A little cash, just in case

If you are staying in Puerto de Mogán, you can easily walk to the fair.

Public transport is strongly recommended for visitors coming from elsewhere. The bus station is conveniently located close to Avenida de Los Marreros.

If you decide to drive, additional parking areas will be signposted, but please expect considerably more traffic than on a normal Sunday and bring a little patience with you.
