Guadix - a day trip from Mojácar with a different side of Andalucía ♥️

What if you traded the Mediterranean for a landscape of clay hills, white chimneys and homes hidden beneath the ground? Around a two-hour drive from Mojácar, Guadix makes a memorable day trip into the heart of Granada province.

Start in the Barrio de las Cuevas, the town’s famous cave quarter. At first, you may see little more than doors set into the hillside and chimneys rising from the earth. Then you realise that many of these caves are still homes. Stop at Mirador del Padre Poveda to take in this extraordinary neighbourhood, and visit the cave interpretation centre if you’d like to see what life inside a cave house is like.

Afterwards, head into the old town. Wander around Guadix Cathedral, find a spot for a leisurely lunch, and make time for the Alcazaba, the hilltop fortress overlooking the city and its surrounding landscape. If you enjoy a good viewpoint, the cathedral tower offers another way to see Guadix from above. Check opening times before you travel if you plan to go inside.

Guadix feels wonderfully different from a day on the coast. It’s a chance to leave Mojácar in the morning, explore centuries of history and one of Andalucía’s most unusual neighbourhoods, and be back by the sea for the evening.

The route from Mojácar to Macenas Mediterranean Resort is a wonderful way to experience this part of the coast at a slower pace. Sometimes the best way to discover Mojácar is simply to keep walking… ☀️🚶‍♂️
