𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐨: 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐆𝐨 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚́𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐚 🕯️🌑

Friday, April 3rd (𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐨), is a complete shift in energy. If Thursday was loud and triumphant with the Legion, Good Friday is somber, quiet, and incredibly moving. This is the day the city mourns, and the atmosphere becomes thick with a different kind of intensity.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲:

🌑 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐬 (𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬): This is the most hauntingly beautiful moment of the week. Late at night, as the 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐬 procession passes through the center, the city authorities literally 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬. The only light comes from the candles of the Nazarenos and the flickering flames on the throne. The crowd falls into a deep, respectful silence. It is chilling and beautiful.

🕊️ 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐜𝐫𝐨 (𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫): This is the official "funeral" of Jesus. The throne is a magnificent silver catafalque, and the music is slow, heavy, and mournful. You’ll see local authorities and representatives from all the city’s institutions marching in black.

🕯️ 𝐄𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐣𝐚𝐝𝐨: For a contrast earlier in the day, look for the 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐝 𝐝𝐞 𝐥𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐝. The colors and the vibe are still very traditional but represent the moments leading up to the crucifixion.

🥀 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨: This brotherhood comes down from the hills of the Victoria neighborhood. Seeing them descend toward the city as the sun sets is one of the most picturesque moments of the day.

𝐇𝐞𝐢𝐝𝐢’𝐬 𝐓𝐢𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲:
If you want to experience the 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐬 in the dark, find a spot on 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢́𝐚 around midnight. Watching the lights flicker out one by one as the procession approaches is something you will never forget. Just a heads up: this is a time for absolute silence, it’s not the time for loud chatting or snacks!

𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞?

I’ve got the estimated times for when the lights go out and the best spots to see the Sepulcro in all its silver glory.
