One little espresso for Mike today when he hasn't had a coffee for over a year, and suddenly we have processed a load of the summer harvest into delicious jars!

- pesto genovese with our basil & garlic
- escalivada catalana with our tomatos, peppers, onions, garlic and aubergines
- salsa verde from our tomatillos and onion
- fig soda and fig jam for newtons from our [you guessed it], figs
- curried cucumber pickles from our lemon cukes, onions and garlic

We are starting to seriously think about making products like these, and our marinated olives, kombucha, water kéfir, choucroutte and more available via a convenient self-serve sales point in the retreat centre.

INTO THE AFTERMATH 🔥

Grabbed neighbour Dave Dave Smith and headed into the Gavarres Natural Park this morning, site of the July wildfire (10km from La Bruguera - we were saved by dint of the winds blowing south not north). Kind of left speechless. It’s a real life Dystopia. Total silence - no birdsong or insects buzzing. Really crunchy rocky ground - all the organic matter and wetness burned out. New views across panoramas previously covered in vegetation. Burned gates and hedges around just-barely-saved houses (we didn’t see any of the places that were not so “lucky”). A smell of burnt dinner in the oven everywhere. But there was a 💚-shaped cloud over Dave at the outset, as well as green shoots popping up in many places 🌱. Nature moves on, and we must hope that those of us pushing for an eco-social transition on earth can succeed at making the people whose work contributes to these fires reduce it, stop it, and clean up after it.

[Cat] Hem agafat el veí Dave Dave Smith i aquest matí ens hem dirigit cap al Parc Natural de les Gavarres, lloc de l’incendi forestal del juliol (a 10 km de La Bruguera - ens vam salvar gràcies als vents que bufaven cap al sud i no cap al nord). Ens hem quedat sense paraules. És una distopia de veritat. Silenci total: sense cants d’ocells ni brunzits d’insectes. Terra rocosa molt cruixent: tota la matèria orgànica i la humitat s’ha cremat o evaporat. Noves vistes a través de panorames anteriorment coberts de vegetació. Portals i bardisses cremades al voltant de cases que amb prou feines s’havien salvat (no vam veure cap dels llocs que no van tenir tanta “sort”). Una olor de sopar cremat al forn per tot arreu. Però al principi hi havia un núvol amb forma de 💚 sobre en Dave, així com brots verds que apareixien en molts llocs 🌱. La natura segueix endavant, i hem d’esperar que aquells de nosaltres que impulsem una transició ecosocial a la Terra puguem aconseguir que les persones que treballen per contribuir a aquests incendis els redueixin, els aturin i els reparin els danys.

🚴🏻‍♀️ OFFROAD, OVERWATER & TRAFFIC-FREE 💧

Rode the recently opened path between Celrà and Girona this morning, with Dave Smith meaning we can get from La Bruguera to Girona on an almost completly traffic free route and avoiding the section of road that sandwiched cyclists between the train tracks and the road next to the Gavarres hills - really nice. Finally!

Aquest matí vaig recórrer el carril bici acabat d’inaugurar entre Celrà i Girona, amb Dave Smith, cosa que significa que podem anar de La Bruguera a Girona per una ruta pràcticament lliure de trànsit i evitar el tram de carretera que obligava els ciclistes a passar atapeïts entre les vies del tren i la carretera al costat dels turons de Gavarres. Per fi!

Esta mañana recorrí el carril bici recién inaugurado entre Celrà y Girona, con Dave Smith, lo que significa que podemos ir de La Bruguera a Girona por una ruta prácticamente libre de tráfico y evitar el tramo de carretera que obligaba a los ciclistas a pasar apretujados entre las vías del tren y la carretera junto a las colinas de Gavarres. ¡Por fin!

It's time to check up on the population of endangered Sticklebacks breeding in the pond just outside the yoga studio. Their Catalan common name, "Escanyagat" (cat choker) is the name of the programme we are part of, run by the environmental NGO Sorellona. This year they found and weighed as many as possible, and we have plenty of new babies, but, like many other animal populations here over the last few months, a few more deaths than usual, which La Sorellona attributed to the heatwaves plaguing us at present.

[cat] És hora de fer un seguiment de la població d’espinosos en perill d’extinció que es reprodueixen a l’estany que hi ha just davant de l’estudi de ioga. Un dels seus noms comuns catalans, “Escanyagat”, és el nom del projecte del qual fem part, dirigit per l’ONG mediambiental Sorellona. Aquest any n’han trobat i pesat tantes com han pogut, i tenim moltes cries noves, però, com moltes altres poblacions animals d’aquí durant els darrers mesos, algunes morts més del que és habitual, que la Sorellona ha atribuït a les onades de calor que ens afecten actualment.

[cast] Es hora de realizar un seguimiento de la población de espinosos en peligro de extinción que se reproducen en el estanque que hay justo delante del estudio de yoga. Uno de sus nombres comunes catalanes, “Escanyagat” (estrangulador de gató), es el nombre del proyecto del que formamos parte, dirigido por la ONG medioambiental Sorellona. Este año han encontrado y pesado tantas como han podido, y tenemos muchas crías nuevas, pero, como otras muchas poblaciones animales de aquí durante los últimos meses, algunas muertes más de lo habitual, que la Sorellona ha atribuido a las oleadas de calor que nos afectan actualmente.

Our various vegetable gardens around La Bruguera are doing very well this summer, despite suffering from the impact of one heatwave after another. Some varieties have suffered (e.g. Montserrat tomatoes 🥵) and some have flourished (passion fruit!). Some new discoveries (lemon cucumbers from Olot, and cocktail cucumbers from Lausanne 🇨🇭) are adapting deliciously. As ever the producd from Joan's conventional kitchen garden next to the guest house is abundant despite (or thanks to) his 85+ years. The produce from our 100% natural one in Agroforesteria de La Bruguera is proving popular with local clients, and the new hugelkultur beds by the Living Lab are also doing brilliantly.

So we can only be grateful - especially in the global context of food shortages and violent conflict, and the "glocal" context of wildfires.

🥾COSTA BRAVA DAYS 🏊

After 11 years here, and all of the work it takes to maintain La Bruguera, fix the old things that break, start new projects (like veggie sales from our field - see previous post), one can get to a poiny where they are not fully enjoying all the wonder this place offers.

This is a problem one can solve easily by having friends who have visited and been tempted to the move here. They are always going "hey let's go hiking on a weekday and jump in the sea because Girona is AWESOME!"

These people are correct, and invaluable. The Girona Costa Brava area IS awesome, and you absolutely should come here and hike, bike, swim , eat and drink.

🥾 DIES A LA COSTA BRAVA 🏊

Després d’11 anys aquí, i de tota la feina que cal fer per mantenir La Bruguera, arreglar les coses velles que es trenquen, començar nous projectes (com ara la venda de verdures del nostre camp - mireu la publicació anterior), es pot arribar a un punt en què no es gaudeix plenament de tota la meravella que ofereix aquest lloc.

Aquest és un problema que es pot resoldre fàcilment tenint amics que l’han visitat i han estat temptats a traslladar-s’hi. Sempre diuen “ei, anem a fer senderisme entre setmana i saltem al mar perquè Girona és INCREÏBLE!”

Aquesta gent té raó i és inestimable. La zona de la Costa Brava de Girona ÉS increïble, i absolutament hauríeu de venir aquí a fer senderisme, anar en bicicleta, nedar, menjar i beure. ✅

Agroforesteria La Bruguera, el projecte germà de La Bruguera de Púbol, després de 3 anys de treball preparatiu al camp, té productes meravellosos a la venda, a prop vostre, si sou al Baix Empordà o el Gironès.

🌱 🐝 Som un projecte de gent implicats en el Baix Empordà, amb ganes de fer menjar de la més alta qualitat, mentre que regenerem i millorem el sòl i el medi local. Cultivem amb mètodes ecològics, naturals i regeneratius. Podem dir que estimem massa la naturalesa com per anar-hi en contra, així que els nostres criteris van molt més enllà d’un simple segell “ecològic”.
