Across the rooftop stands the Convent of Santa Magdalena — plain stone, unremarkable roofline, easy to overlook after the first evening. Within it rests Santa Catalina Tomás, the only Mallorcan the Church canonized. Born to a poor family, she kept sheep before she kept anything holy and never left the island. Four hundred years later, neither has she.

The light goes gold before it goes dark. That’s usually when the whirlpool bath fills — a quiet half hour before the evening begins.

Some rooftops try too hard. This one just has the view, a good drink, and nothing else to prove.

Water that changes color depending on the hour, somewhere along the cliffs below Valldemossa. Villages built by people who had no interest in being discovered — Fornalutx still looks like nobody told it the century changed. On the north coast where the Tramuntana mountains meet the sea without asking permission. Terracotta roofs, dry-stone walls someone built by hand a few centuries ago and nobody’s bothered to improve on since. Mallorca was never waiting for anyone.

Nowhere to be, and the whole old town watching.

A brass arm, a globe of glass, the morning laid flat against the wall. On Carrer de Sant Jaume — Sant Jaume’s church and Santa Magdalena’s convent at either hand, La Bodeguilla next door, Gordiola’s glass and the Cathedral toward the sea, the Born and La Concepción’s espadrilles a corner away — the old city keeps its appointments, yet stays apart from the noise. Central, it turns out, can also mean quiet.

Past the planting, the bell tower of Santa Magdalena rises into a flat Mallorcan blue — a convent of Augustinian canonesses, enclosed for close to seven centuries, and for a time the home of Catalina Thomàs. One watches it from the terrace. It was never made to watch back.

Marès, quarried from the island long before there was a building to hold it up. A blue that arrived much later and keeps its own counsel. A Cesta by Milá takes the last of the afternoon. Nothing announces itself at Sant Jaume — which is rather the point.
