With a little help from our friends we finished putting sulphur on the vines. It is a nasty task that irritates the eyes so we were very happy with the extra hands. And what better way to say thank you then with a seafood paella in the vineyard accompanied by our own wine. The first of many paella’s that we will prepare here!

We were gifted this fine bottle of wine by winemaker Garret Bowlus of himself when we visited the vineyard near Carmel in California in 2023. Our good friends and favorite travel companions and invited and introduced us. Thysa and I even had a pruning competition - which I lost - in the vineyard. We hadn’t bought ours yet, but we knew it wouldn’t be long. Some fine memories to raise a glass to, even if it is already way past midnight!

Our artist in residence Louisa Hammond exhibited her research of the past weeks yesterday, into the colors that can be extracted from the plants, rocks and sand in the area around Polopos. Hibiscus, fig leaves, madder roots, olive and false pepper branches, sand from the beach at Melicena, stones from the mountain and lees of our wine, she made use of them all and showed the different effect they have on cotton and silk. She will take the extracted pigments home to Canada where they will be used in her ceramics.

Thanks for your positive energy and for showing the people of Polopos and us what is possible in pigment extraction from the natural world directly around us. Thanks to all the people who showed up to see Louisa’s work. Thanks Casa Mariscal for the video!

Onze artist in residence Louisa Hammond presenteerde gisteren haar onderzoek van de afgelopen weken naar de kleuren die kunnen worden gewonnen uit planten, stenen en zand in de omgeving van Polopos. Hibiscus, vijgenbladeren, meekrapwortels, takken van olijf- en valse peperbomen, zand van het strand bij Melicena, stenen uit de bergen en de droesem van onze wijn: ze maakte van al deze materialen gebruik en liet zien welk effect ze hebben op katoen en zijde. Ze neemt de geëxtraheerde pigmenten mee naar huis, naar Canada, waar ze ze zal gebruiken in haar keramiek.

Bedankt Louisa voor je positieve energie en voor het laten zien aan de mensen van Polopos en aan ons wat er mogelijk is op het gebied van pigmentwinning uit de natuur om ons heen. Bedankt aan iedereen die is gekomen om Louisa’s werk te bekijken en bedankt Casa Mariscal voor de video!

On Thursday April 30th from 18:00 to 19:00 the AAP opens its studio to present the work done by Louisa Hammond in her 2 week residency in Polopos. Please feel welcome to step inside and learn what the abundance of Polopos and the surrounding mountains has to offer in the hands of a pigment artist.
Louisa Hammond is a visual artist based in Edmonton, Canada. Her primary media are ceramics, textiles, and natural pigment extraction. She holds a Bachelor of fine arts with distinction from the University of Alberta.
With a focus on printmaking and ceramic sculpture, Hammond’s practice is rooted in honesty to material. She uses home grown and foraged plant extracted dyes, grows her own paper pulp, and uses bonfire wood ash in her ceramic glazes - honouring a substance in all its permutations.
During her 2 week residency in Polopos she searched locally and sustainably for hematite,
pomegranate hulls, charcoals, ochre deposits, umber, soft pigmented rocks, and dye plants. She has written poetry, ground down soft pigmented rocks into a powder and mulled them with gums into lightfast watercolour pans. She foraged plant pigments and transformed them into drawing inks and dye baths.
In the Casa 3 residency program she has generated new forms and concepts for future ceramic work that she will make upon returning to Canada.

Afgelopen week in De Telegraaf met schreeuwerige koppen erboven, vandaag in het Noord-Hollands Dagblad wat prettiger van toon. Er is een Spaans plaatsje, Arenillas, dat kennelijk bewoners zoekt en daarom huizen en vaste banen aanbiedt. Prompt kregen wij verzoekjes binnen om onze kijk daarop te geven. En omdat ik (Wijnand) al een tijdje mensen help met huizen vinden en advies voor een soepele integratie, had ik daar natuurlijk wel wat over te zeggen 😎

Wat ik niet deed was waarschuwen voor een gratis huis trouwens, want hoezo?! Een gratis huis! Wat ik wel aangaf is dat een ieder die de stap overweegt om naar Spanje te verhuizen, moet zorgen een reëel beeld te hebben van het feit dat in Spanje weliswaar voor niets de zon opkomt, maar dat je nog steeds geld moet verdienen of ergens een pot hebben staan. En goed onderzoeken of de regio/plaats waar je naartoe kan, ook de regio/plaats is waar je naartoe wil. Een gratis huis in een gebied waar niks je aantrekt is waardeloos. Dan heb je opeens alleen de lasten en niet de lusten van je huis onder de zon!

Het eerste huis in Polopos waarop overboden is, is een feit 🫣 Er is steeds minder interessants voor redelijke prijzen te koop ten westen van Motril, dus meer en meer mensen weten onze regio te vinden. Gelukkig zijn er meer leuke dorpjes dan alleen Polopos.

Dit fantastische huis, een favoriet van ons, staat te koop in een dorpje vlakbij. In het huis zijn drie aparte appartementen ingericht, dus verhuren of kopen samen met wat vrienden, behoort tot de mogelijkheden. Het is inclusief inboedel, en als je een moestuin wil aanleggen, dan kan dat ook, want er zit een stuk geïrrigeerd land bij van 250m2. The first house in Polopos that has been outbid is a fact 🫣 There is increasingly less interesting property for sale at reasonable prices west of Motril, so more and more people are finding their way to our region. Fortunately, there are more charming villages than just Polopos.

This fantastic house, a favorite of ours, is for sale in a village nearby. The house has been converted into three separate apartments, so renting it out or buying it together with some friends is a possibility. And if you want to create a vegetable garden, that is also possible, as it comes with a 250m² plot of irrigated land. Ya es un hecho que se ha vendido la primera casa en Polopos que ha sido superada en la puja 🫣 Cada vez hay menos propiedades interesantes a precios razonables al oeste de Motril, por lo que cada vez más gente se anima a venir a nuestra región. Por suerte, hay muchos más pueblos con encanto además de Polopos.

Esta fantástica casa, una de nuestras favoritas, está a la venta en un pueblo cercano. La casa se ha convertido en tres apartamentos independientes, así que alquilarla o comprarla con amigos es una posibilidad. Summer is coming. Not so ominous a phrase as Game of Thrones’ winter is coming, but something we are very conscious about in this greener than ever springtime in Spain. Somewhere at the end of June most of what is green will have turned yellow. This is also magical, but an annual certainty, which the abundance created by the autumn and winter showers is not. El verano se acerca. No es una frase tan ominosa como la de «el invierno se acerca» en Juego de Tronos, pero es algo que tenemos muy presente en esta primavera más verde que no se cuándo en la alpujarra. A finales de junio, casi todo lo que está verde se habrá vuelto amarillo. Esto también tiene su encanto, pero es una certeza anual, a diferencia de la abundancia que traen las lluvias de este otoño e invierno. ¡Aprovecha el momento!

De zomer komt eraan. Niet zo’n onheilspellende uitspraak als ‘de winter komt eraan’ uit Game of Thrones, maar iets waar we ons terdege van bewust zijn in deze groenere lente dan ooit in Spanje. Ergens tegen het einde van juni zal het meeste groen geel zijn geworden. Ook dat is magisch, maar een jaarlijkse zekerheid, in tegenstelling tot de overvloed die de herfst- en winterbuien dit jaar met zich meebrachten. Pluk de dag!

An artistic pilgrimage to a tree trunk. We don’t hug trees, but we visit this remnant of a once majestic oak several times a year. It reminds us a bit of the statue Rodin made of Balzac, or a decapitated bust who stubbornly stands his ground, even though he is doomed to eventually lose the battle against time. The reason to go here is an old photograph of Federico Garcia Lorca, the famous Spanish poet and playwright who was assassinated in 1936 and whose body was never found. He and four friends, among which de renowned Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, stand under a tree in Haza del Lino. This tree. With the last resting place of Lorca still in shrouds, this is as good a place as any to commemorate him, especially on foggy days like these.
