September in Tarifa is something special. And not just because the beaches are quieter and summer is still here.

This is the time of year when thousands of birds make their way south, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar on their journey from Europe to Africa.

And from Tarifa Lodge, we get a front row seat.

Storks, eagles, vultures and many other migratory birds pass right above us. Sometimes you only have to look up from the terrace to see them circling overhead before continuing their journey across the Strait.

It’s one of those things that still makes us stop and watch, no matter how many times we’ve seen it.

Add warm September days, empty beaches, long evenings outside and Tarifa without the August crowds – and you’ll understand why we love this month so much.

September might just be our favourite month in Tarifa.

Summer is still here, but everything feels a little easier.

The days are warm, the ocean is still perfect for swimming and the beaches suddenly have space again. Tarifa is still full of life, but without the August crowds. You can wander into town, find a table for dinner, stay outside until late and actually sleep with fresh air coming through the windows.

For us, September has the best of summer just a little more relaxed.
