One of our favourite places to visit…
Tabarca Island just off the coast of Alicante — what it is, how to visit, and what to expect.
✅ What it is
Tabarca is the only inhabited island of the Comunidad Valenciana, located off the coast of the city of Alicante in Spain.
It’s a protected marine area: its waters form a marine reserve given their, “crystalline” quality and rich biodiversity.
Historically: the island was fortified in the 18th century after being vulnerable to pirate raids.
📍 How to get there & practicalities
You can reach Tabarca by boat/ferry from Alicante (and nearby ports such as Santa Pola).
One tour example: from April–October there’s a 6-hour outing from Alicante: ~1.5 hours sailing each way, then time on the island (swimming, visiting) and back.
Things to bring: swimwear, water shoes/flip-flops (due to rocky beaches), sun protection (shade is limited).
🎯 What to do & see
Enjoy the beaches/coves: clear waters, good for snorkeling thanks to the marine reserve.
Walk around the old fortified village with white-washed houses, historical walls and gates.
Visit the natural reserve’s underwater world: you’ll find sea grass meadows (posidonia), fish, etc.
Sample local seafood and rice dishes typical of the island.
❗ Things to keep in mind
The island is quite small (about 1.8 km long and up to ~400 m wide) so you won’t need more than a day unless you want to stay overnight.
Because it is small and popular, during high season it may get crowded.
Beach terrain can be rocky rather than sandy; water shoes and good footwear help.
