The Naarajoki River – Kyyvesi – Puula route is well-known for being scenic without being too demanding, which is why it’s often recommended for beginners or mixed-skill groups. Starting from Pieksämäki (Naarajärvi area) and ending in Kangasniemi, you get a mix of calm river sections, open lake paddling, and peaceful forest surroundings.
A few practical notes if you’re considering it:
Duration flexibility:
3–5 days is realistic. Faster paddlers can do it in 3, but stretching to 4–5 days makes it much more relaxed and enjoyable—especially with kids.
Water conditions:
The river sections are generally gentle, with little to no strong rapids, but be prepared for more water flow in spring. The lakes (especially Puula) can get windy, so planning crossings early in the day is smart.
Camping & stops:
There are several designated campsites and natural stopping points along the way, many with basic facilities like fire pits.
Canoe vs kayak:
Canoes are often preferred for this route because they:
carry more gear (useful for family trips)
are easier for relaxed paddling
But kayaks work perfectly fine if you’re more experienced or packing light.
Navigation:
The route is fairly straightforward, but a map or GPS is still recommended, especially when transitioning between lakes.
