Thank you, our residency artist

”What a gem Hakoniemi is—the perfect place to have spent the last three weeks writing and reading. I’m working on my first novel, which I started writing last year during my Fiction MFA at NYU, and which explores questions of memory, language, and identity. I spent the mornings writing scenes and scribbling strange diagrams of how they might all fit together, and the afternoons reading and translating. And there was also plenty of time for long walks through the woods, bike rides around the archipelago, and evenings in the wood-fired sauna. I’d come back again in a heartbeat 💕”

Welcome to the residency, ! It’s been a joy to watch North Karelia transition towards summer with you 🌱

”The surroundings of Hakoniemi, with its beautiful nature, provide the perfect setting to develop and explore my sculptural textile works. The rhythm of daily life here, time spent in the atelier, long walks in the forest, sauna, and ice swimming, offers relaxation and allowing
me to fully immerse myself and nourish both focus and creativity”

About the artist:
Chris Snik is an Antwerp-based artist and head of the Costume Design Department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Her practice has evolved from ”slow costuming” into a sculptural textile practice, where she uses her expertise in tailoring to explore form and craft through autonomous textile pieces.

History of the Finnish virpominen tradition is a fascinating blend of religious roots and nature mysticism. 🌿✨

This Palm Sunday tradition originates from the Orthodox and Lutheran cultures of Karelia. However, it also carries deep echoes of ancient folklore; decorated willow twigs were once believed to possess magical powers.

The act of virpominen - a ritual blessing using these willow branches - was traditionally seen as a way to bring health and good fortune while warding off evil. Happy Palm Sunday!

Thank you to our latest artist who was the first to enjoy the cultural offerings of our Helsinki residency and the peace of the countryside simultaneously. This is a wonderful combination that allows you to get the best out of your residency time in Finland.

“Finland holds a serene calmness that blooms in both the city’s energy and the ancient stillness of the countryside. My residency period in Helsinki and by Lake Saimaa deepened the connection to nature and the Finnish mental landscape.

My work evolved toward ancient mysticism and memento mori pieces, guided by the spirits of the trees and the voice of the forest. The resulting effigy collection embraces the beauty of imperfection (Wabi-sabi) and was formed in inseparable collaboration with water and forest. These works stand as both an offering and a witness to a time that leaves its mark far into the future.”

Finding clarity in the winter landscape and the quiet observation of the fire. Sometimes the most important part of the creative process happens outside the studio.

Wishing you a restorative weekend ✨
