When admiring fall colors called ruska in Lapland, you can feel the crisp in the air. Winter and freezing temperatures will be here soon and proper winter clothing is the key element to make sure your vacation in Lapland is comfortable. Here is our guide for your winter gear:
❄️ Layer up!
Layering makes all the difference, as the air between each layer insulates and it is also easy to adjust layered clothing.
Base Layer is the one keeping your skin dry, so use thin merino wool or technical synthetic materials. Usually base layer is two-piece-set, like thermal leggings and thermal top.
Mid Layer is the one insulating and trapping the warmth. Use thicker fleece or wool. Mid layer should be little looser to make sure layers have some air between.
Top Layer is the one protecting you from Arctic breeze, snow and moisture, so it should be windproof, and preferably water resistant and insulated. Top layer can be overalls or insulated ski pants and parka.
❄️ Protect your extremeties!
Most of the body heat escapes from head, hands and toes, so remember to cover them good.
Head and neck: use wool or fleece hat/beanie and protect your neck with balaclava, scarf or buff.
Hands: mittens are much warmer than gloves, use thin merino gloves for base layer and top them with wool or fleece mittens.
Feet: thick wool socks under winter boots are best to keep your feet warm. Choose good insulated boots ranked -30 Celsius. Size up your boots, as air makes good insulation between wool socks and boots.
