Practical Tips for Paddling in Finland
Everywhere you go in Finland, you will find waters suitable for paddling. Ready for adventures? You will need to find a service provider to help you with equipment and expertise on local waters as safety must come first.

Rivers and lakes
With over 188,000 lakes and a massive network of rivers, there is an endless number of options for paddling.
Please note that there are just very few occupied kayak rental points where you could just walk in and rent a kayak, canoe or SUP board. In most cases, you do need to book equipment in advance and you either get a key code or the service provider delivers the equipment to you.
We have a partner network of professional paddling guides all over the country taking you on guided tours. If you are a beginner, you can either take a basic instruction first or choose an easy paddling tour taking place in the evening or on rivers or bays protected from heavy winds. For more experiences paddlers, there are half-day and full day trips. An adventurous paddler can choose an overnight tour and stay in a small cabin or tent on an island in the middle of lake nature. On lake Saimaa, it is also possible to make multi-day kayak tours from island to island along a paddling route.
Best services and most magnificent sceneries are found in the Lakeland area in southern and southeastern part of the country. In some cities like Hämeenlinna, Tampere and Kuopio for example it is possible to take a city sightseeing by kayak as the towns are located right next to big lakes.
In Lapland, there are semi-guided paddling trips on rivers. You are taken by car with the equipment to one end of the river and they will meet you again in the other end. You can not get lost as you just need to follow the river. Many hotels also have canoes for the hotel guests all over Finland for short self-guided paddling trips.

Coastline and archipelago
Our western archipelago is the largest in the world but you can find archipelago also right outside Helsinki and along the southern and northwestern coast. Unlike the green forests and meadows in the lake district, here you will see rough rocks and islets.
In Helsinki there is a paddling centre on the eastern as well as western side of the city. A unique experience is to take a midnight paddling trip, especially on light summer nights in June-July.
In the archipelago, there is quite a lot of boat traffic in the peak season. The guides know where it is safe to paddle. However, the circumstances can be harder on the sea, so for families we recommend rivers and small lakes.

Whitewater
Whitewater rapids are not very demanding in Finland, mostly I-II class (out of IV), very few III (out of IV).
In southern Finland there are river rafting services available on river Kymi in Anjalankoski, in eastern Finland on Ruunaa Rapids in Lieksa, in central Finland on Kuusaankoski rapids in Laukaa, in northeastern Finland on Oulanka river and in northwestern Finland on Kukkola rapids in Tornio and on river Muonio and in Lapland on river Juutua in Inari.
If the safe whitewater part is short, you might get the experience twice. Normally you would use a raft ideal for 4-8 people but there are also wooden rowing boats offered in some cases. Please reserve appr. 2-3 hours.

Please note! In most paddling tours the minimum number is 2 participants. Basic swimming skills are required.

Bike Touring in Southern Finland
Southern Finland features a mix of paved bikes paths, quiet paved country roads and gravel roads. You will ride through beautiful landscapes and small villages. You will pass lakes and rivers, on the coastal routes sea pops up every here and there. We have collected some tips to help you to plan your trip:

1) Timing
Cycling season starts in May and ends in October. We do have continental climate, which means it can be hot in July-beginning of August but most often we have so called Finnish summer weather, which means you will experience many weather types during one week, even within one day. After a rain shower, we have sun shine again. Summer temperatures typically are from 15 to 25 degrees celcius but at the beginning and in the end of the season especially nights get colder.

2) Route
We have 3 main types of routes: from village-to-village, lakeland and western archipelago

Village-to-village routes are best in early and late seasons as the routes are planned so that there is great cycling infrastucture and services are open also outside the peak season. All these tours start from Helsinki. We have tours mixing self-guided and guided day tours, which make the tours well suitable for single cyclists as well as groups. In case a transfer is needed, we use local trains where you can take a bicycle with you without any extra cost.

Lakeland routes offer most variable profiles. There are hills, bridges across waters, small villages and public beaches. In the peak season there are a lot of summer cafeterias and all kinds of events from arts to music and handicrafts. On many routes, you will need to take a cycle ferry, which only works once or twice a day and in early/late season only at weekends if even that, so you do have plan in advance and follow a time schedule. Best starting places for the lakeland trips are Lappeenranta or Puumala with great rental shops.

Western archipelago route takes you from island to island. You will need to take ferries. The roads go in the middle of the islands and can be crowded in the peak season in July. Our route takes you to the islands of Seili, Nauvo, Korppoo, Kökar and main island of Åland. The route can also be planned so that you start your trip from Finland and end it in Sweden.

Each route will be adapted to your cycling preferences. In average, e-bikers take 60-80km/day and manual bikers 30-50km/day. A helmet is always included in the bicycle rental. Duration of most cycle tours vary from 3 to 8 nights.

3) Luggage
We do not prefer to arrange luggage transfers for ecological reasons. Instead our guests are provided with 2-sided panniers. Luggage stays at the starting point.

4) Accommodation
Most guests make roundtrips with multiple stops but it is well possible to also to choose one accommodation and make day trips from there.

Location is the accommodation selection criteria number one but all accommodations used by us , must be at least 3-star level. We try to select the most authentic, little b&b's or manor hotels with local hosts and access to sauna after a cycling day.

You are mostly welcome!

Have you ever tried cross-country skiing? We don't mean hard sports but slowly, silent skiing trips enjoying the beautiful, snowy nature in spring winter. Slow life at its best. Take a look at our guided ski tours in north-eastern Finland, skiing week package in Saariselkä or book a guided day tour in any ski village.

Spring winter is the most enjoyable time to visit the north! Long, sunny days and glittering snow in March-April invite one on long snowshoe walks, cross-country skiing tours and just play in snow. This is the time when locals get to Lapland. Would you join them?

Typical choices you need to make when planning a holiday:
- village or wilderness?
- one location or more locations?
- traditional or modern?
- serviced or self-service?
- balance between activties and free time?

Here you can see two of my favorites - a traditional log cabin located hillside with a view in ski village of Saariselkä and modern igloos located by a river and next to a lake in Posio in the middle of the wilderness.
