Sarlat-la-Canéda is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in France. Its golden stone buildings date back to the 14th century when Sarlat grew wealthy from trade and became an important market town in the Dordogne. The entire old town was restored in the 1960s thanks to the Malraux Law, which saved many historic centres across France from decay.
Today, walking through Sarlat feels like stepping back in time. The narrow streets lead to hidden squares, including the famous Place de la Liberté where the Saturday market has been running for centuries. Regional specialties like foie gras, truffles, and walnut cakes are everywhere, and autumn is peak truffle season if you want the best experience.
Sarlat has also been a popular filming location. Its medieval setting has appeared in productions like Jeanne d’Arc and Timeline. If you climb the panoramic lift in the former church of Sainte-Marie, you’ll get the best view over the tiled rooftops.
