Surfing arrived on the French coast in 1956, in Biarritz. During the filming of the Hollywood movie *The Sun Also Rises*—adapted from a Hemingway novel—producer Dick Zanuck had a surfboard sent over from the United States.
It was his screenwriter, Peter Viertel—a novice surfer—who tried his hand at the « sport of Hawaiian kings. » The seed was sown! The American drew three Frenchmen into his wake: George Hennebutte, Jacky Rott, and Joël de Rosnay.
La Côte des Basques is the birthplace of surfing in France. In 1959, the first clubs, such as the Waïkiki Surf Club, emerged, and local youth embraced the sport.

Le surf est arrivé sur les côtes françaises en 1956, à Biarritz. Lors du tournage du film hollywoodien Le soleil se lève aussi, adapté d’un roman d’Hemingway, le producteur Dick Zanuck se fait envoyer une planche de surf depuis les États-Unis.
C’est son scénariste Peter Viertel, surfeur novice, qui s’essaye au « sport des rois hawaïens ». La graine est semée ! L’Américain entraîne dans son sillage trois premiers frenchies : George Hennebutte, Jacky Rott et Joël de Rosnay.
La Côte des Basque est le berceau du surf en France. En 1959, les premiers clubs comme leWaïkiki Surf-Club.apparaîssent et la jeunesse locale s’empare de ce sport.
