Saturday morning fun: balloon chasing once we knew this morning’s hot air balloon flight of the annual Thouars Montgolfiade had taken off.

They weren’t able to fly last night due to the weather conditions, but this morning was perfect!

And it was different seeing them come down to land instead of just taking off (as in previous years). Video in comments.

Another fun afternoon at the trotting races - we all chose a horse to back and some of us even had a little flutter. Tim’s win covered our entrance, a portion of chips and a couple of beers. Win win!

The stage is set…for Hamlet in 30 minutes, although the duration according to the festival programme is one hour 🤣. We think this is because all the extra letters in French make the whole play longer 😉

The annual blues gig, as part of the Au Fil du Thouet festival. This year we were treated to Greg Izor and the Box Kickers!

Always such a lovely atmosphere at the prairie by the river just below the château sipping a beer and eating some ‘nibbly bits’ with good friends.

Wow! Another amazing evening courtesy of the ‘Au Fil du Thouet’ festival in Thouars, now in its sixth year.

This was a ‘balade circassiene’ - a circus walk - starting at the Musée Henri Barré in the old part of Thouars. The circus troop appeared out of the museum building with two members balanced on bamboo poles. No one was quite sure what to expect.

We then walked through to the museum garden, where one woman did this amazing routine on a rope, before heading down to the river/Prairie des Ursulines for a series of acts at various stages.

All were awe-inspiring - the level of skill, the strength of their core muscles, and the quiet gentleness of each performance.

There were few words, music very similar to Cirque de Soleil and they led us from one location to another by gestures and smiles. Exquisite!

Oh, what a night!

The revamped Grandes Tablées de Saumur moved to the courtyard of the château itself for one night only.

Three vintages of Saumur-Champigny to quaff: 2023, 2025 and a mystery vintage, a four-course meal, and great craic with good friends.

Plus a concert by Spelim (video in comments), who really got the crowd going - drumsticks were handed out to the audience so we could all join in the reggae/techno/soul/funk vibe. It was awesome!!

Enjoying a jazz gig - the first event of Thouars’ free summer arts festival - in the grounds of the château overlooking beautiful old Thouars. The shade from the trees is very pleasant as it’s 33° at 8pm

Oh my! What a fabulous evening soaking up the atmosphere of the Anjou Vélo Vintage weekend - seeing the bikes, spare parts and accessories plus the retro clothing.

So lovely listening to the music and just watching people let themselves go and enjoy the moment! Especially various couples showing off their Ceroc prowess. Just a joy!

We’re trying to keep the third magpie chick that has fallen/been pushed out of the nest at the top of our cherry tree alive.

It is putting up a brave fight in 35-40° heat. Mum and Dad Magpie have been squawking around but not coming down to feed it, despite us placing it some distance from the house.

We’re using a Calpol syringe to give it water and tweezers to offer it morsels of raw chicken.

We’ve now brought it inside in a makeshift nest and put it in front of the fan. It’s still breathing…for now.
