One of the joys of summer in the Charente is watching our lavender come alive with wildlife. 💜

Lavender is far more than a beautiful plant with an amazing fragrance. It provides an important source of nectar for a huge variety of pollinators, including honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, moths, hoverflies and many other beneficial insects. These creatures play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by pollinating flowers, fruit trees and crops throughout the region.

From colourful Swallowtails and Painted Ladies to busy bees collecting pollen, our lavender beds are constantly buzzing with life. It's a wonderful reminder of how important even small areas of planting can be in supporting biodiversity and helping nature thrive.

This martyr village is about 30 minutes drive from our gite. One of the saddest places I have ever visited but it must be done in respect and remembrance to the people who lost their lives that day.
Today the 10th June is the 82nd anniversary of the massacre at Oradour-sur-Glane. Four days after D-Day and as the Germans headed for the north to reinforce their troops. On the 9th came the roundup and summary executions in Tulle by the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich where 99 people were hanged from lamposts and balconies. On the 10th, elements of 1st battalion of 4th SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment encircled the small village of Oradour-sur -Glane in the Haute Vienne, just 22km north west of Limoges. It was market day and the village had more children and visitors there as a result. The Germans entered the village and separated the men from the women and children, who were herded into the church. The men were machine-gunned to death and the women and children were shot or killed by gr***de. In total 642 men, women and children were murdered that day with just six survivors, one who escaped through a window in the church. To make it even worse, all the bodies were deliberately burned to prevent identification. It is remembered as one of the martyrdom villages of France. Rappelez vous Oradour-sur-Glane. It had no connection at all to Oradour-sur -Vayre.

The general who gave to order escaped any punishment. Adolf Deikman who led the massacre was killed on the 29th of June. others who participated went to trial in Bordeaux in 1953. Seven Germans had been held prisoner for 8 years and then release. All but two of the Alsations involved were allowed to walk free.

Do you like our new ride on mower?
Here at Chant D'Oiseau we embrace nature and work with her, not against her.
We even designed the bungalow to be single level with wide doorways,have built in solar power, excellent insulation and a VMC cooling system for efficiency meaning guests of all capabilities can be comfortable in all types of weather.
