The commemorations and celebrations for the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day Landings in 1944 took place, as every year, on June 6th. However, you do not need to be in Normandy on June 6th in order to pay you respects and you can visit cemeteries, memorials and museums throughout the year (although most museums shut in Jan).
Eco-Gites of Lénault is an hour from the Beaches so it is easy to spend part of your holiday exploring these important locations. For those who want to travel less then there are many interesting sites close to the gite. These include:
The Commonwealth War Cemetery at St Charles-de-Percy.
The Memorial at Montchamp to the French Resistance.
The 13th/18th Hussars Memorial on Mont Pinçon.
The Memorial at Le Plessis-Grimoult to a Polish airman.
The Memorial plaque at Lénault.
The US Memorial in Périgny.
You can find more details to these local sites in a blog post I have written and there's a link to it in the comments.
