Maison Lairoux Holiday Cottages in the Vendée, France

Today is international cat day, so I thought that I would introduce our four furry friends here at Maison Lairoux!

First, we have Fleur - everyone’s favourite! She lives to be stroked and is very friendly. She has only had 3 legs since she was very young, but still manages to get around very well - considering she is nearly 17 years old!!

Then we have Smokie - the friendliest stray cat you will ever come across. He spent a year living in one of our outbuildings and then one day just decided that he would move in with us! That was 3 years ago - we think he is about 7 years old.

And finally, we gave Rosie and her kitten, Snowy. Rosie was another village stray cat who used to pop over and eat some of the food we left out for Fleur - she comes and goes, but only stays in the house in winter. In December 2024 we noticed that she had 4 kittens with her in the garden, so we managed to convince them to come in for food and we eventually found homes for 3 of the kittens.
Snowy was way too independent to be a ‘normal house cat’ as she loves to be outside and only comes in for food or when the weather is bad!
All cats get along nicely and some will even say hello to our guests!

If you enjoy birdwatching, then a Spring visit to our cottages at Maison Lairoux is just what you need!
We have so many birds living in and around our gardens. Here are a couple of images of ones that I heard in the garden this morning in just 10 minutes!

And finally…… we finished the lounge in Le Vieux Café.

This room needed a lot of work as the two exterior facing inside walls had to come down due to cracks, damp patches where a fireplace used to be and lack of insulation.

Jason was happy as he could get the sledgehammer out again - such a mess, but easily cleared away from the tiled floor!

Once again we fitted lots of insulation, decorated the walls and added a feature wall with a leaf printed wallpaper.

We played musical chairs with the furniture once the decorating was complete, and finally decided where to put everything. We added three small side tables at the ends of the sofas for guests to put their drinks, changed the TV stand and created a desk area for guests who might need to work during their holiday ( including lots of plug points & usb connectors for laptops and other equipment ).

So, having finished the first floor, we continued our renovation project on the ground floor of Le Vieux Café.

Jason was looking forward to this bit as it involved knocking down walls with a sledgehammer!! We always knew that there wasn’t a great deal of insulation behind the exterior walls, so we wanted to remove what was there and add a breathable membrane and better insulation - all held away from the stone wall to avoid sweating!

We’ve left the stone window surround exposed and added a feature wall of muted floral wallpaper - it totally lifts the mood in the kitchen!

And now for the master bedroom!

So much work was done in this 30 square meter room - lots of insulation added, a supporting beam put across the ceiling to hide a nasty crack, all walls either painted or papered with new wildflower patterned wallpaper, floors sanded and stained, and new floral themed artworks added too!

A great space for relaxing in the king sized bed )160cm x200cm), plus there is a single bed and travel cot for younger children.

And here’s the middle bedroom….

For the last couple of years this bedroom has been laid out as a small double bedroom - we have now designed it as a perfect room for your children - with two single beds and lots of bedtime story books!

We renovated everything in this bedroom - from floor to ceiling and everything in between - including finding a lovely tumbling leaf patterned wallpaper.

So, the renovations are now finished in Le Vieux Café - nearly five long months of hard work !

We hope you agree that it’s all been worth it??

Here’s the first video of the works done in one of the bedrooms - we’ve added insulation to keep the room warmer in winter & cooler in summer, new plasterboards, painted, sanded & stained the floor boards, added a feature wall of cherry blossom wallpaper and then started to furnish the room.

Originally this bedroom had two single beds - we decided to convert it into a double bedroom with a king size bed (160cm x 200cm) that can be split into two singles if needed.

We then added a new chest of drawers, dressing table and new artwork on the walls.
