Caron & David's French adventure, as we renovate 3 cottages and barns in to our home and hopefully one day in to our business.

Renovation.
Come rain or shine, the work here never stops.

We have had a lot of rain, and the barn has no guttering.
The rain falls straight off the tiles onto the mud, which with the hooves of the horses, wheelbarrows full of poo and our muddy boots, the area in front of the barn is looking more like a bog every day.....So five years of ignoring the winter mud, the 'main man' climbed his ladder and put up the guttering...... but oh, nothing here could possibly be that easy, and with a lot of discussion ( some very heated), we realise that the barn does not have a straight front, but more of a slight V ...
So after more huffing and puffing and a little swearing, the guttering and down pipes are fitted, and the rain water will now run down the gully to the field...... The floor no longer will become a bog when it rains 😀 one very happy wife.

After causing trouble, I headed to the kitchen and made some blueberry muffins 😋 So we now also have happy 'main man'.

It's funny how a simple task, like crimping the edge of a mushroom and leek pie, can evoke so many emotions and memories.

As I pressed my thumbs into the soft pastry, my mind zoomed back in time, and there I was, a young girl, watching my beautiful mum, pressing her thumbs into the pastry of a pie.

Are memories sent to break us

Or maybe to keep us strong .?

Sat here, on a beautiful Friday evening, eating a lovely pizza, with an ice cold gin & tonic, and this is our view.

Here is Harry Hoo, our own little ginger nija warrior. Always naughty, always funny, and this weekend very unwell.

I am very fortunate in the fact that my horses live at home with me, so I am able to see them all the time.
On Friday, I thought to myself, Harry seemed a little quieter than normal, not his usual funky self. By Saturday, it was obvious that something was wrong, so I took his temperature, it was a little raised, an hour later, I took it again it was now through the roof so the vet was called, after a thorough examination and temperature retaken and another increase it was proclaimed he had anaplasmosis. a disease caused by ticks.
Treatment by multiple needles and a very poorly little Harry Hoo was left to rest. The weekend passed, and today, the poor little man had a repeat of the needles.

Scarry time, luckily, it was caught early, and hopefully, he will make a full recovery and soon be back to his usual, naughty, greedy little man self.

In the post box, we received this beautiful gift.

Sheet music from .
It made our hearts swell and a tear to our eyes.

We are beyond proud of this man. He is our youngest child, and his battles have been hard and painful.
His music is emotional and beautiful, and we know that with every note made, it was with pure emotion.

If you are fortunate enough to be able to play the piano (neither me nor his dad can !) Please treat yourself or someone you love to this beautiful collection.
It is a lovely book with some insight into this man, our son Dexter Britain 🧡🧡

You can also listen to him on nearly all the music platforms. 🎶

When your neighbours' huge cockeral pays you or rather you little chickens a visit. strutting around the yard as if he owns the place.
He is stunning.
Even the Lloyd de doid de deneo little dog chose to keep his distance, as the big fella spent the whole day strutting around and eating all the chicken feed... I wonder if he will be back tomorrow .

The scaffold has been removed, which, as with most of the projects here, was not without incident.
This incident could have been devastating, we don't actually know what happened except to say at some point during the removal, a main electrical wire was broken, resulting in a loud bang and the wire left laying across the drive !
I need to say the wire continued to be live until the emergency team from the electric company came and made it safe .

It's finished, the new roof is complete, and the scaffold has been taken down. The beautiful shiny new guttering and down pipes have been installed, replacing the grey plastic that just perished in the hot summer sun.
Now, the tidying up will begin, and there is a lot, the tiles leave shards of clay so sharp they could burst a car tyre, or worse cut a small dogs paw or become embedded in a horses hoof, when they have all been collected and safety disposed off and only then will the work on the cottages begin.
At the moment, the cottages look very sad, old, uncared for, and to be honest, they look worse than before the new roof, which though truly wonderful has only enhanced all the work still to be done.

But hey, we have done it 4yrs on, and finally, all 3 little cottages have beautiful, shiny, and most importantly, waterproof new roofs.
We could cry...Happy tears.

The rain has stopped, and the frost has appeared, bringing beautiful crisp mornings, the skylight in our bedroom had a layer of frost on it and laying in bed looking up to the sky it was sparkling like tiny diamonds.

The brilliant team on the roof has not stopped, and the end is definitely insight.
We removed all buckets, about 10 of them that we used to catch the rain, the floors are almost clear, and we can see the extent of the rooten floorboards.
We are hoping to save some, but others have rotted beyond repair, we even had one of the rain buckets fall through into the room below !
It's busy and muddy, and the job ahead of us is huge, we shall be glad when the warmer weather arrives .
I just keep visualising the end result and the day our first paying guests arrive,.......well new roofs are not cheap, even this small size 😀

So chin up and onwards.
Renovation, what an exciting life💕 .
