Rustic France Gites

Rustic France Gites Two beautiful gîtes in Poitou Charente. From a few days to forever stays, in the lovely area of Deux Sevres... Thank you, Sam

Two beautiful gîtes, two barns..in the Charente, France. Available from one day to forever stays, in this amazing & multi-faceted area of La Belle France. The climate of the Poitou-Charentes is one of the mildest in France, second only to the Mediterranean coast in hours of sunshine. Famous for sunflowers, miles of regimented vineyards and thousands of acres of wide, green spaces begging to be exp

lored. Gentle rivers and waterways wander throughout this region, and ancient towns straddle those river banks with offers of “une table avec une vue” while you linger over lunch or stop for a drink. Oysters are a big local speciality of the region, as is the Pineau Cognac aperitif. (Yummy!)

Our two gîtes are situated between the market towns of Sauzé-Vaussais and Chef-Boutonne in the department of the Deux-Sèvres. The area surrounding Sauzé-Vaussais was the backdrop of many wars and fights in ancient times and the town has a Romanesque church, a small hotel, bars, a supermarket, boulangeries (of course) and an English tea shop. Chef-Boutonne also has several bars and restaurants, and both towns host weekly markets where you can buy fresh, local produce. Sauzé-Vaussais has a lake with children's play area - a really great day out and there are other spots just like this. “Plan d’eaus” they are called, locally. The delightful Château Javarzay at Chef-Boutonne is well worth a visit, although ‘spoilt for choice’ as there are so many beautiful Châteaux in striking distance. If you like a bargain, why not wander around some of the many local brocantes (car boot sales - but with style!) which are held throughout the year. If you fancy nipping out for a quick drink to our "local", try the La Chat bar in Melleran- it's within cycling/walking distance and is run completely by volunteers. The bar is open Friday and Saturday evenings and offers good food, very reasonably priced drinks, and games etc for children. Just down the road, the ancient town of Melle has silver mines and three Romanesque churches to visit. With, of course more great little bars and restaurants including a lovely pizzeria. We are ideally placed for exploring the glorious Charentaise countryside which is bursting with sunflowers during the summer months. The area surrounding our gites is perfect for walking. We also have a selection of adult and children's bikes on site which you are welcome to borrow. There are some wonderful beaches less than 2 hours drive on the spectacular Côte Sauvage, but even closer still is the holiday resort of Châtellion Plage and the cosmopolitan seaside town of La Rochelle, one of the most picturesque and historically rich cities on the Atlantic coastline; with it’s huge marina, a very large aquarium and a botanical garden. Civray, Ruffec and Confolens are all lovely places to visit where you can picnic on the river or hire a boat at Marais Poitevin (Venice Vert or Green Venice) and spend the day meandering through the collection of sleepy water ways. Still with rivers in mind, why not spend the day kayaking on the Charente - great family fun! Even enjoy a little white water in places - but nothing too crazy...

There are numerous historical towns within an easy drive such as St-Jean-d'Angély, Chauvigny and Parthenay, all of them with their individual stories to tell. Why not ‘swing by’ La Vallée de Singes (valley of the monkeys) at Romagné, which is a wildlife park with no fences or cages! Visit the famous Poitou donkeys for guided visits and animal rides - just 30 minutes down the road... or La Planète des Crocodiles - an hour away in Civaux! If you want a full day of adventure we would recommend La Palmyre Zoo at Royan (one of the best in France, so I’m told), the Puy du Fou theme park, south of Cholet. Perhaps Futurescope at Poitiers, only an hours easy drive away. This is a great area where you can have the best of all worlds - peaceful countryside, seaside resorts, ancient towns and cities and numerous family attractions. Even without the glorious sunshine, (and as the 2nd sunniest spot in France, we have plenty of that) we think there is something for everyone! At Rustic France, we are at the heart of a thousand activities; but, when you are ‘back at base’, unwind and relax into Charentaise life. Of course, you could always just take a glass of cool Pineau and sit by the pool, on the terrace, or in the garden and relax in the French countryside outside the majestic Tobacco Barn or the romantic Stonemasons Barn...

Wish You Were Here!! For more information, or to book a gîte, send a message, an email, a text..or call!

May 1st in France, known as Labor Day and The Lily of the Valley holiday, is a unique blend of political activism and a 16th-century floral tradition. It is the only public holiday in France where nearly everything—from supermarkets to museums—is strictly closed.
The giving of lily of the valley to friends and family is considered a lucky charm. Tradition says that in 1561, King Charles IX was given a sprig of lily of the valley for luck and decided to offer the flower to all the ladies of his court every May 1st.
While the flowers represent luck, the day is also a serious occasion for workers' rights. It is a major day for labor unions. Large parades and demonstrations take place in Paris and other major cities to advocate for workers' rights and social justice.
Essentially, you might spend your morning at a political march and your afternoon delivering tiny white flowers to your grandmother!! 💙🇫🇷❤️

On the surface Restaurant Le Moulin de Condac https://www.facebook.com/lemoulindecondacrestaurant is another lovely French eatery. However, I've always loved this place for the views too as you sit in a quiet, serene spot watching the water, ducks and dragonflies go by...check this link for their menu https://www.moulindecondac.fr/notre-carte-moulin-de-condac/ Then there's the twist!!! The Brazilian "Rodizio" package (available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) *WOW* 10 kinds of yummy meats carved straight to your plate from these awesome 'swords' and paired with unlimited fries and salad. For dessert, roasted pineapple with cinnamon. There were 10 of us going Brazilian this time - but here's my son and daughter in law enjoying their Rodizio. Beware.....the reason they declare everything is 'unlimited' is because the meat will beat you....you'll have to roll home in a suporific, meat induced coma!! Good darts!!!

I LOVE a brocante!! To find the best brocantes (antiques fairs) and vide-greniers (flea markets) in the Poitou-Charentes region covering Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres, and Vienne, there are two great websites that most locals use.
https://vide-greniers.org/evenements/Poitou-Charentes is arguably the most popular site in France. It’s very user-friendly and allows you to filter by department or specific dates.
Best for finding everything from huge fairs to tiny village sales.
Pro Tip: Look for the "Brocante" tag if you want professional antique dealers, or "Vide-greniers" for locals selling second-hand household items.
https://brocabrac.fr/poitou-charentes/ is excellent because it often includes a map view and detailed descriptions provided by the organizers.
Best for seeing exactly where the event is on a map and checking "verified" listings.
You can jump straight to the department you want or need 16 (Charente), 17 (Charente-Maritime), 79 (Deux-Sèvres), or 86 (Vienne).
Very handy because although we are in 79, we are really close to the borders of 16 and 86 and not a long drive to 17 either!
💙🇫🇷❤️

Mallet's horse is a ‘courier’ found in Ménigoute, just a little North from here. A fantastic but evil creature. It is white and magnificent. When it sees a tired traveller, it approaches him very gently, lets itself be stroked; but as soon as the traveller has mounted, it carries him off at full speed
The horse is saddled and bridled, so is ready, and people may encounter him on their way back from a long day. But woe betide anyone who dares to ride on his back! This horse targets lonely travellers. But as soon as they climb onto his back, a mad race begins. The eyes of the Mallet horse emit a glow that lights its path when it gallops, and his nostrils vomit smoke. The horse throws the unwary traveller into a stream , then transforms into a demon.
A young man was returning home from a family gathering to bring his wife exciting news of an inheritance . On the way, he came across this wonderful horse and climbed onto its back. Then began a race until dawn . The horse threw the man into the stream before transforming into a demon. The locals discovered the amputated man's body, as well as strangely shaped footprints near the spot.
Some say the Mallet horse is a legendary black horse from Poitou Charente, with eyes shining like two embers, which walks only during moonless nights. Either way the ride ends with the death of the rider – so avoid all horses alone and saddled in the dark!!
There would be only one way to stop this animal, "it is to have on oneself the ransom of the journey" . Throwing six coins marked with a cross in front of it could stop it, as could making the sign of the cross , and using holy water or a marked penny. A medal of Saint Benedict (known as the "sorcerers' cross" ). But really, who carries those things anymore….?!?! 💙 🇫🇷 ❤️

Shout out for Rustic France Gites local French bar - just 4 minutes away! La p'tite planche is a friendly bar in Clussais-la-Pommeraie. You get a fully stocked bar (now serving Guinness too), snack bar and village grocery store. It's a central hub for local life and you'll get a warm welcome and a jolly, cozy and relaxed atmosphere.

As the name suggest, La p'tite planche is famous for it's tasting platters (cold meats, cheeses), also baked camembert, frites....and more and regularly organises themed events; wine tastings, RedCactus poker nights, and some great live music.

It has inside seating, an outdoor terrace and easy access with free parking right outside the boundary. I have pics and a reel above! See for yourself, and drop in for a board on your next visit here 💙🇫🇷❤️

Verteuil-sur-Charente is a gorgeous medieval village often described as a fairytale destination. Its history is deeply intertwined with the La Rochefoucauld family, whose imposing château still dominates the skyline. The Charente River winds peacefully through narrow streets and past historical stone buildings.
It's charm overload, probably my favourite local spot and just 25 minutes down the road.

Château de Verteuil is an iconic triangular fortress, modified in the 19th century, and towers over the village. While it remains a private residence, it has hosted distinguished guests like King Francis I and King Louis XIII throughout history.

Church of Saint-Médard is a 12th-century Romanesque church home to a rare, life-size 16th-century "Entombment of Christ" (It is REALLY something to see) and with painted terracotta figures attributed to the workshop of Germain Pilon. If it isn't open, knock on the door of the elderly lady opposite and she will give you the key!!!

The Mill (Moulin de Verteuil) is a working watermill located at the foot of the castle where you can still buy freshly milled flour or enjoy a coffee in its riverside precinct.

Chemin des Dames: A historic set of steps built so that local ladies could reach the church without getting their dresses muddied by the animals frequently herded through the main streets.

La Sénéchalerie is wonderful; I've attached photos from a few visits and also examples of the entertainment. It truly is a unique establishment set in a 16th/17th-century building that once served as the home of the seneschal (a medieval judicial official). Today, it operates as a vibrant bistro, bar, and concert venue that perfectly captures the village's historic yet welcoming atmosphere.
The restaurant features a wooded garden and an outdoor terrace that offers exceptional views of the Château de Verteuil.

The menu focuses on hearty grill-style dishes, including prime rib (côtes de bœuf) on reservation, fresh salads, and desserts. Plancha-style cooking is a highlight of the evening service. Who doesn't love a 'board'?

The interior is a quirky mix of rustic and shabby chic. But it's cozy and romantic feel, makes it popular for both casual drinks and group gatherings.
True to its name, the venue regularly hosts concerts, karaoke nights, and other live entertainment, particularly during the summer months.
I'm much more inclined to eat at a French restaurant, and Verteuil-sur-Charente has three great eateries, La Sénéchalerie, Le Moulin de Verteuil and Jeux des Pots. The first has staggering village and chateau views, the last two sit on the Charente and are blissful spots.
Do visit when you come 💙🇫🇷❤️
