With 2020 and all its' alarms behind us, the possibility of a holiday in France this year is becoming much more likely as the days go by.
France is currently on the "Amber list" for overseas holidays, meaning that if you are able to accept a short period of quarantine in your own home on your return to the UK, you may come and enjoy a holiday in Normandy. In addition, the improving situation in France offers a positive sign that it will soon be transferred to the coveted "Green list" removing altogether any need for quarantine.
France is opening up. The bars, cafés, restaurants and shops are opening, as are most of the tourist attractions. Masks may still be a necessity, but we are used to them by now, aren't we? (hateful things!)
And the situation of Le Haut Fresnay, surrounded as it is by peaceful countryside, has always made us and our guests feel safe from the epidemic.
With this in mind, we shall be returning to Normandy in time to open the cottages for holidays by the middle of July.
We shall contact all our clients who were forced to postpone their holidays from last year, with the news that we look forward to seeing them at last. And we shall welcome bookings from other people like ourselves who can't wait to have a change of scenery.
We are displaying our availability and prices on our website: www.colmanscottages.com

A day out for anyone who loves horses. The Haras du Pin near Argentan is a National Stud with its own Chateau dating from the 18th century. The stables are open for guided tours. Every Thursday in season, they hold a Pageant of Horsemanship beside the Chateau, followed by a parade of carriages. It’s a spectacular display which we attended recently with Margaret Kirby, one of our guests, who took these photographs.

It has been suggested that we should provide a link to the Simply Owners website, so here it is, and we hope once again that everyone who sees it will share it as widely as possible!

Contact the owners direct about holiday rentals - No 'Owners Direct' booking fees and free payment protection.

07/01/2018

It’s that time of the year when you may be considering your next holiday. We would like to let you know that we now list our property on a website called SimplyOwners because, unlike the big companies, they do not charge booking fees and they provide free Payment Protection.

Hopefully you will return to visit us at some point in the future, but we recommend that wherever you intend to go in 2018 you should find your property via the SimplyOwners web-site, to avoid unnecessary and excessive booking fees. And please share this with anyone who might be interested.

We’re keeping up with the 21st century! Today sees the relaunch of the website for our holiday cottages in Normandy in a different format, designed not only to display correctly on the small screens of mobile phones, but also to adapt automatically to the larger screens of other devices, such as tablets and PCs. It is much more accessible, either sitting at home, or out and about using a mobile phone. No matter what type of device is used, the display will be right for it, and access and navigation will be easier.
We hope all our Facebook friends will like the redesign and its’ ease of use. It would be lovely if you would let us know if you have any comments on the new format. Your feedback will help us to make changes and improvements. Please share it as widely as you can!
Our website address for the cottages at Le Haut Fresnay is still:
www.colmanscottages.com
Why not take a peek at it now on your mobile, tablet or desktop computer – or all 3 if you want to see the differences in the display!

Welcome to Le Haut Fresnay! Enjoy relaxing self-catering holidays for 4 or 6 people in three delightful cottages, near Céaucé, Normandy, France.

This year's donations for garden produce and jam from the garden at Le Haut Fresnay has raised £60 for the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team, who are still busy helping folks who get into trouble in our local area here in Yorkshire where we spend the winter. Many thanks to all our guests who contributed to the cause. We hope you enjoyed your fruit, vegetables and jam!

In the summer of 2017, a new length of cycle track was added to the one running south from Ceauce into Mayenne and along the towpath of the River Mayenne. The new extension runs north from Ceauce to Domfront, and will soon link up with the East/West cycle way running from Paris to Mont St Michel. It adds a new dimension to the already attractive bike routes in the area, along quiet country lanes as well as dedicated cycle routes. Thanks to Tina and Andy Walker, and to their friends Bob and Rose, for these photographs. We are always happy to welcome cyclists and their bicycles to Le Haut Fresnay. We offer weatherproof, secure storage for the bikes, and watch admiringly as the intrepid cyclists set off for their outings!

Having had a fairly hectic time this winter, it was only recently that we got around to handing over the money raised from our vegetable ‘sales’ last year. We collected £50, and we send our thanks to everyone who contributed. As those of you who stayed with us may remember, our chosen charity was the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team, who gathered up Paula and her broken ankle last January from the hillside known as The Shawl, close to Leyburn.

We have attached a photo of a much more challenging rescue which took place last Saturday, February 4th. All the emergency vehicles passed our home here in Grinton, blue lights flashing, so we knew something was afoot even before we saw the Air Ambulance returning later on. The team secretary, when asked for her permission to use the photo, was able to pass on the news that the casualty is recovering nicely, with less damage done than originally thought.

We're home in Yorkshire now for the winter, but before we left Le Haut Fresnay, we as good as finished our project for the year: the construction of a picnic site in the valley. We took advantage (again) of a visit from Malcolm and Harri to build a firepit, which will be at the centre of the picnic area. We even found time to christen it with our neighbours, Liz and Paul. Sadly, we don't seem to have photographs of another evening we spent around the fire, which included Jo and Colin Ace, and Beth and John Whittenbury, who were staying in the cottages at the time. Perhaps no-one wanted to put their wine glasses down for long enough to take photos on that occasion! Anyway, all that remains now is to put the benches and the picnic table in place. Roll on Spring!

One of our favourite things to do here is to visit a local restaurant at lunchtime for a "Menu Ouvrier". This is a fixed price meal, with 3 or 4 courses, plus wine or cider and coffee (usually included in the price). There is often a self-service buffet starter, and probably a choice of a couple of main dishes, followed by a cheese board and a selection of desserts. It's not fine dining, but it's always good value, well-cooked food, and the service is cheerful and friendly. The chef will probably come out and shake your hand, and the restaurant will be full of French working people taking the time-honoured long lunch break. There will always be the non-workers as well, of course, some of them British, who know a good deal when they see it!
