Chilled Summer Evenings

During the months of July and August the Dordogne region holds a number of regular Marché des Producteurs (night food markets).

Local food producers set up their stalls and cook their delicious produce to order. There is all sorts on offer from duck, foie gras, lamb, beef, snails, vegetable fritters, chicken, truffle pasta, cheese, brandy, Pineau, wine, beer, herbal teas, French fries, salads, bread, desserts, crêpes and ice-cream. You simply order what you fancy and sit down on a big table amongst locals and a scattering of tourists.

This evening we went to the night market at Varaignes. A pretty village, just a short drive away, no mass tourism, just an authentic experience. The golden hues against the château walls looked stunning as the sun dropped. Wonderful aromas filled the warm evening air, blended with music and chatter. A French family joined our table, 3 generations and were an absolute delight, especially the Grandpa who had an amazing twinkle in his eyes and chatted away happily to us sharing his escargots.

Lilac hues tonight after the sunset.

A Praying mantis visited us this evening.

Mantises cannot change colour fast like an octopus or chameleon.

During molting they can change from green to brown (or brown to green) only when they shed their skin and grow during their nymph stages.

Temperature, light, and humidity during a molt help decide what color the new skin will be.

We are surrounded by incredible nature and a nature lovers paradise.

🇨🇵Une mante religieuse nous a rendu visite ce soir.

Les mantes ne peuvent pas changer de couleur rapidement comme le font les poulpes ou les caméléons.

Elles ne peuvent passer du vert au brun (ou du brun au vert) qu'au moment de la mue, lorsqu'elles changent de peau et grandissent au cours de leurs stades nymphaux.

La température, la lumière et l'humidité au moment de la mue déterminent la couleur de la nouvelle peau.
