On Saturday we took a trip to Rainbow Mountain, with aptly named Rainbow Mountain Travels. We had an 0215 alarm call, with an 0300 pick up! They were excellent from start to finish, the buffet breakfast en route was spot on, the two guides during the hike were very professional, particularly as 3 members of our group succumbed to altitude sickness and needed oxygen.

Rainbow Mountain is a recent tourist destination, only discovered in 2016, as climate change revealed the peak having previously been covered in snow year round.

The hike up to 5036M was hard work but thankfully we are well acclimatised and led the pack🔥💪 Living at altitude undoubtedly gives us an advantage.

We were given the opportunity to hike back to the minibus through Red Valley, immediately adjacent. It was a great experience, ours was the only group to do so; we both felt it was actually the highlight of the day - standfast the llamas of course who stole the show.

We had an excellent buffet lunch en route back to Cusco. We got back to the hostel and crashed after such a long, tiring day - a great experience and great value too.

Up early Wednesday morning, we checked out of the grotty hostel and skipped (well not quite with our backpacks on!) round to the Magic Packer hostel who let us check in early! ❤️

We hiked up to the Sacsayhuaman Inca Ruins above Cusco. A pretty hard walk but well worth it, they were incredible. The symmetry of the site and the ingenuity was amazing, sadly our photos do not do it justice. We headed back down to Cusco, via the Cristo Blanca (White Christ) Statue which also towers above Cusco.

We stopped off for a cheeky beer in the San Blas district on the way down, a treat after the big hike up!

Later we went to a delightful restaurant Rich had spotted called Inti Llay; a delicious meal! Rich enjoyed a fabulous dessert (it deserves its own post!). Rated the 3rd Best Restaurant on TripAdvisor, it lives up to its billing!

After a great nights sleep and a hot shower at the Magic Packer morale is fully restored!

Thursday morning, we set off early, via a coffee shop 😉, to hike (9km!) up to three sets of ruins above Cusco. I must point out 99.99% of tourists take either a tourist open top bus, local bus or taxi up to the ruins! Not Team Love, we decided to hike up, great training for our trip to Machu Picchu.

We bought a multi ticket (Boleto Turistico Del Cusco Integrale), giving us access to 16 sites/museums across Cusco and the Sacred Valley.

We visited Tambomachay, Puka Pukara and Q’enko, non were as impressive as yesterdays ruins, but hiking back down we passed through local villages and saw hordes of parents and school children picnicking and flying kites, something you don’t see at home these days.

We stopped for another cheeky beer, this time at a shop/cafe called L’atelier in San Blas. Then we had a take away pizza from a small (rough and ready) family business close to our hostel, delicious!

A great day; we are really starting to enjoy the wonderful Cusco Vibe!

We arrived in Cusco last Monday at 0630 on the PeruHop overnight bus. As usual Julie slept reasonably well, Rich didn’t - bless him.

We went and checked in to our hostel, which turned out to be pretty grim! But they let us in very early so it was a consolation!

We booked a Free Walking Tour with a lovely guy called Elvis 🤨 who showed us around the city, the San Pedro Market and panoramic views. A great tour, after which we had a delicious lunch.

A lovely coffee stop in the afternoon and then an early night in our freezing hostel, and not even a warm shower after a very long day. Morale was low!

Tuesday - After a difficult night in our grotty hostel (stray dog barking in the street right by our window) we headed out for a cappuccino/hot chocolate to cheer ourselves up.

Julie had booked in for a yoga session at a studio called Saquine which was lovely. Meanwhile Rich headed to the cafe next door, el Café de Mamá Oli, where he enjoyed his second cappuccino while researching alternative accommodation opportunities and came up trumps - Magic Packer - an easy short walk from the first hostel, cheaper, hot water, breakfast included, clean and great staff! Winner 🤞

After lunch we walked around the pretty San Blas area of Cusco taking in the sights. We went to book the new hostel for Wednesday night onwards and thankfully they had plenty of rooms available it being low season, so only one more night staying in the grotty hostel! ❤️

We left Isla del Sol and took the afternoon bus to Puno arriving early evening.

We had planned to stay in Puno for 3 nights, our intention was to stay overnight on one of the Reed Islands (Uros) on Lake Titicaca. However the weather conspired against us, which you will see in some of the photos, with very dark rain clouds. We decided a freezing cold (-1) overnight and windy lake wasn’t the place to be!

So on arrival, we checked into the hotel, then headed out for some food - we were very excited that the hotel room had heating!!!

The next morning, after a very average breakfast at the (Pukara House) hotel, we walked around the Puno streets and took in the culture of the city. There was a morning parade celebrating Health Workers, Military, and Emergency Workers. In the afternoon a Wedding Procession went through, with everyone dancing in their finery, it was lovely to watch all the indigenous ladies twirling their skirts!

We booked a short 3 hour (1200-1500) boat trip to the see the Uros Lake Community which was interesting, but felt it was a bit intrusive for the islanders. Albeit there is the juxtaposition that without tourists they wouldn’t be able to keep the Reed Islands community going. Given how the overnight weather panned out we were glad we only spent one night in Puno!

Late afternoon, early evening we enjoyed watching more marching bands and dancers that randomly paraded through the main square. It really brought home to us how many of the population play musical instruments and how it engenders social cohesion, such an important part of their society.

We had dinner at a lovely restaurant (Catu) we found by accident in a courtyard just behind the main square. Delicious food and great atmosphere.

And then back to the hotel to wait for our Peru Hop bus pickup (2100) for our overnight bus journey to Cusco. Enjoyed our 24 hours in Puno, but that was long enough.

What a fabulous few days we’ve spent on Isla del Sol.

The island was recommended to Julie by an old friend (Louise) from Brownies/Guides (!) , whose elder brother (John) was in her year at school. John follows us on FB, and realised we are doing a similar trip to Louise and put her in touch with us. Louise said not to spend much time in Copacabana and to stay on the island. Fantastic tip! We loved it there - thank you Louise!

Day 1 - Stunning balcony views across the lake to the snow capped Corderillas Oriental mountain range and pretty harbour below. We then had a lovely simple dinner in the hotel. A cold night, no heating, but we were very cosy under the thick blankets.

Day 2 - We walked around the larger part of the island. Stunning views in all directions. At around 4000 metres altitude it was hard work at times. Another stray dog followed us for most of the day. We passed the village choir congregated at a viewpoint singing beautifully. We walked through little villages and once again experienced simple rural life.

Later we had drinks/cocktails as the sunset over the Lake and then we went to a restaurant that had been recommended to us by a lady in a cafe in Copacabana that we got chatting to. Called Las Velas, it has a great TripAdvisor rating and sits at 4010 metres overlooking the lake. Beautiful, it’s lit solely by candlelight and serves Lake Titicaca trout, superbly cooked in white wine, and pizza! A magical experience, and another fab random recommendation.

Day 3 - We just chilled!

Day 4 - Today, we checked out of our hotel and did the shorter bottom loop around the island, mainly to kill time before our boat at 1500. We’ll be sad to leave, it’s been wonderful.

Our hotel, Jacha Inti has been perfect. Recommended to us by a NZ lady called Doreen who we met in Sucre. It was very close to the harbour so not many steps to climb with our rucksacks on! The room was perfect, apart from the lack of heating which is the norm here! Beautifully, simply decorated with lovely bedding and a very nice en suite bathroom. The best accommodation so far! Breakfast was simple, but more than enough and they kindly did our laundry for us. Dinner x 2 nights for us both was around €25, with a couple of beers. Very reasonable. Loved it!

Our next destination was Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca, an overnight stop over before we head by boat to Isla del Sol, one of the islands on Lake Titicaca.

We spent one night in this faded town. We did enjoy couple of Lovely highlights though!

Searching for a light lunch, we came across a delightful lady called Macarena who had recently opened a tiny Falafel and Fries cafe. It looked perfect for what we wanted, so we sat down to a delicious lunch. Open for just 3 months, she had already been badly affected by the recent Government 64 day shutdown. We have our fingers crossed her fledgling business succeeds.

We then went for a short walk along the lakeside. 15kms later we had walked around the headland, enjoying the waves crashing on the shoreline as we strolled along. We stumbled upon simple Bolivian rural life as we wandered past newly ploughed fields, waved to local indigenous farmers tending to their sheep and cows, all the while accompanied by a very well behaved stray dog, who decided to adopt us for the afternoon.

We returned to our hotel, La Cupola, relaxed and happy after an unexpectedly wonderful afternoon. Topped off by an excellent dinner in the hotel restaurant (5 well deserved stars on TripAdvisor), we look forward to the next few nights on Isle del Sol.

We arrived in La Paz after a bumpy but not too scary overnight bus journey.

Day 1 - We love a cable car, so the first thing we did was explore La Paz via the amazing cable car network serving as a ‘skyway’ across the city. It gave us a great appreciation of the vast city.

Day 2 - We walked up to see the famous murals, then we visited the Witches Market (less touristy than we expected) and we both had a haircut!

Day 3 - As we soaked up the culture of this crazy city we witnessed Sunday family cemetery visits, queueing for fuel (we’ve seen 2 mile long queues!), funky buses and drank lots of coffee!

Day 4 - We went to see the Cholitas (female) Wrestling; its roots bound up in the desire to reduce domestic violence in the indigenous community, great fun with proceeds giving back to the poorer communities.

Four days in La Paz was more than enough!
