26 for 26 – No.17 | Normandy Pottery

Potty about pots?
If you are (and even if you’re not) this week’s gem might just be for you.

Confession time…
I’m a little bit potty about pots! 😂

Whether it’s a beautifully simple white vase, a rustic cider jug or a mid century, fat lava vase that looks perfect on our sideboard, I just can’t resist them, it’s the designer in me I guess.

So this week’s Normandy gem is for fellow pottery lovers… and even if you think ceramics aren’t your thing, bear with me – because this place is unlike anywhere else we’ve visited.

Just a short drive from Le Pressoir lies the little village of Noron-la-Poterie, where pottery has been part of local life for generations.

Our first stop was Poterie Turgis. Tucked behind an old courtyard, we watched craftspeople shaping clay on the wheel before wandering through a charming doorway into the shop…
…and our jaws dropped.

Thousands upon thousands of pots, jugs, bowls and vases stretched as far as we could see.

And the shelves? Well… let's just say they had character, talk about wonky!

So gloriously bowed under the weight of all that pottery that I spent half my visit admiring the ceramics and the other half hoping nobody sneezed.

One thing’s for certain: you wouldn’t want a bull loose in there!

Founded in 1946 and now run by the fourth generation of the same family, Poterie Turgis produces more than 12,000 different pieces, with around 95% still thrown on the wheel. From timeless Normandy stoneware to elegant contemporary designs, there really is something for every taste.

Just a few hundred metres away is another delight – La Poterie des Vieux Fours – where enormous garden planters, sculptures and ornaments fill the grounds. One rather magnificent boxer dog almost rivalled our own Cooper!

So why not browse or buy in both of these amazing places, that’s not even potty!

Here’s the history bit -

Normandy’s pottery tradition stretches back centuries and remains an important part of the region’s heritage. It's practical, beautiful and proudly handcrafted – exactly the sort of hidden gem we love discovering.

There is Roman and older, pre-Roman (Iron Age/Gaulish) pottery found in Normandy. While the region is widely known for its medieval and later ceramic tradition, it has a rich, albeit fragmented, archeological record dating back to the Gallo-Roman era.

Excavations in Western Normandy, particularly in areas like Lisieux, Sées, and the forum of Vieux-la-Romaine, have revealed local and regional pottery production from the Early Roman Empire.
The museum at Vieux-la-Romaine displays Roman archaeological remains, including pottery that shows the foundation of the region under Roman influence. (The museum is another Normandy gem we loved and is well worth a visit)

As for me? I fell head over heels for the minimalist white vases with their beautifully textured finishes. The designer in me was smitten.

And this weekend I’m hoping to visit the first Normandy Ceramics Market in Bayeux, so I’ll report back with more pottery discoveries soon…

Watch this space! 👀🏺

26 for 26 – No.16 | The Longest Yarn 🧶

When people think of Normandy and D-Day, they often picture beaches, tanks, aircraft and military history.

But this week's gem tells the story in a very different way...
With knitting & crochet needles.
Yes, really!

🧶 A D-Day Story Told in Yarn
After being seen by more than 500,000 people around the world, The Longest Yarn has returned to Normandy.
And we think it's one of the most charming, moving and unexpected exhibitions you'll find during the commemorations.
Displayed in the beautiful church of Saint-Hilaire-Petitville, near Carentan, this remarkable handcrafted artwork stretches for an astonishing 80 metres.

It's history, One Stitch at a Time

The exhibition tells the story of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy through hundreds of knitted and crocheted scenes.
Look closely and you'll discover:
Landing craft approaching the beaches
Paratroopers descending from the skies
Soldiers advancing through Normandy villages
Tanks, aircraft and military vehicles
Civilians playing their part in the liberation

Every figure, every vehicle and every landscape has been lovingly created in yarn. The level of detail is extraordinary and what makes The Longest Yarn so special isn't simply the craftsmanship.
It's the people behind it - the thousands of volunteers from around the world contributed their time, skill and creativity to help tell the story.

Together they transformed wool, thread and imagination into something genuinely moving.

This year's exhibition also includes The Longest Yarn II: Britain at War, featuring 80 handcrafted panels depicting life in Britain from 1939 to VE Day.

From the King's famous wartime speeches to the everyday work of the Women's Land Army, it celebrates not only those who fought, but also those who kept life going at home.

Why we think you’ll love it -
It's creative. It's heartfelt. It's fascinating.

And somehow, despite telling one of history's biggest stories, it feels wonderfully personal.

If you're visiting Normandy during the commemorations, this is one exhibition we'd highly recommend.

Proof that sometimes the most powerful stories aren't carved in stone... They're stitched in wool.

💎 Part of our 26 for 26 series – sharing Normandy's hidden gems throughout 2026 💎

Only in Normandy could you spend the morning exploring D-Day history, the afternoon admiring an 80-metre knitted masterpiece, and the evening relaxing by the pool with a glass of local cider.

And honestly?
That sounds like a rather lovely day to us.

26 for 26 – No.15 | D-Day Commemorations

Each year, in June, the D-Day commemorations in Normandie grow more poignant, more powerful, and more precious. As time passes the number of veterans able to return to these shores becomes smaller so the moments shared here among locals, visitors, families, and those who remember take on even deeper significance.

What makes the D-Day commemorations here so special is that they are not simply events to watch. They are moments to experience.

You might find yourself standing beside a veteran's family sharing stories, watching vintage military vehicles rumble through a village square, listening to the haunting sound of bagpipes drifting across the beaches, or joining locals and visitors alike as they gather in remembrance and friendship.

Over the years we've been privileged to welcome many wonderful guests to Le Pressoir who return for the commemorations. Some arrive in beautifully restored military vehicles, including members of the Military Vehicle Trust, while others come simply to pay their respects and walk in the footsteps of history.

One particularly special friend is a piper with the Scots Guards and we were honoured to be invited to witness him pipe across Pegasus Bridge during the 80th anniversary commemorations - a moment we'll never forget.

It's those personal moments that stay with you.

Here are some of Our Favourite Events

Standing with Giants – British Normandy Memorial
Perhaps the most moving tribute of all.
1,475 silhouettes stand overlooking Gold Beach, representing the British personnel lost on D-Day. It is a powerful and deeply emotional sight that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits.

Vintage Vehicle Parades
Throughout the commemorations, beautifully restored military vehicles, jeeps, motorcycles and trucks travel the roads of Normandy, bringing history vividly to life.

Pegasus Bridge Military Motorbike Parade
The roar of wartime motorcycles, period uniforms and the atmosphere of Pegasus Bridge make this a wonderful event.

Bagpipes, Pipes & More Pipes
If, like me, you love the sound of the pipes, you're in for a treat.

From the Bagpipe Parade at Gonneville-en-Auge to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pipes and Drums at Juno Beach, and the spectacular international Pipes & Drums parade on Sword Beach, there are wonderful opportunities to hear these stirring sounds across Normandy.

Parachute Drops over Omaha Beach
Watching parachutists descend over Omaha Beach is always a memorable sight and a fitting tribute to the airborne forces who played such a vital role.

Freedom Balls & Swing Festivals
Not all remembrance is solemn.

Many events celebrate the joy of liberation with 1940s music, dancing, vintage fashion and community spirit. The Swing D-Day Festival perfectly captures this atmosphere.

And yes... we've seen the Satin Dollz perform and they are fabulous!

Omaha Beach Freedom Picnic & Fireworks
One of the loveliest family events of the commemorations.
Picnics on the beach, live music, dancing, friendship and a spectacular fireworks display over Omaha Beach as darkness falls.

What we love most about the D-Day commemorations is the balance they strike.

There is remembrance. There is gratitude. But there is also friendship, music, laughter and community.

The commemorations remind us not only of what was sacrificed, but also of what was preserved.
Freedom.
And perhaps that is the most fitting tribute of all.

Here are some of our favourite photos of previous years and a little video of Paul and his fellow pipers and drummers.
