So sitting here under our covered area, waiting for the timer on the pasta to ping. It has not been a bad day, the temperatures have been in the twenties with the threat of thunderstorms which can be very localised.
As today is a bank holiday in France we have spent most of our time in the garden. We planted another couple of tomato plants and four green beans, hope we have better success with the beans this year. Our potatoes, planted in stages, are going strong and the other tomatoes looking quite healthy. We harvested our first crop of broad beans on Wednesday which produced 230g of beans, have had another go today but we haven’t de podded them yet. We still have our beds of potatoes, onions, beetroot, carrots, courgettes and aubergines doing well.
So if Mr Tangerine Man decides on another excursion and things get even messier then we should be ok for veg. That said I am not sure on the meat option, taking down a wild boar with a .177 air rifle may be a bit of a challenge.

Well it is that time of the year. The last of the winter frost should be behind us and the fruit trees are in blossom.
With all of the uncertainties in the world today it makes sense to ‘grow your own’. So with the last of the winter cabbage, almost finished, broad beans just starting to grow pods it is time to get planting.
Today Lisa and I have planted 60+ onions, 6 tomato plants (we have gone for mostly grafted varieties), 2 aubergines, a courgette (more to follow), 4 blette (Swiss chard) and 2 chilli plants. We also sowed carrots and beetroot seeds, not sure of numbers, and all of these go with the 62 potatoes that have been planted in batches weeks apart.
So whatever the orange peril decides to do next we should be ok for veg.

OK so we have had the MIL here for Christmas and going in to the New Year. In general she has been no trouble and often lending a helping hand, not too good with a chainsaw or an axe, but can wield the vacuum around quite well.
That said she eats very little and is pretty selective as to what she eats. Last night she had scrambled egg on toast, Lisa had a shop bought veggie pizza so I decided I wanted something more substantial.
Chicken Madras (I like fresh coriander), rice and popadoms. Spare light bulb for scale!

My first attempt at steak and kidney pie. Vegetables from the garden and, yes, I do like gravy with chips. All in all I’d give it a 7/10, I prefer to not have a pie in a dish but I could not get the little critter out, will have to work on that!

Petit catastrophe
We had a spell of very wet weather two weeks ago and this has caused our broad beans to get blight/mildew. I have been able to pick just two more times but this is the final harvest as I have removed the dead or dying plants, only 4 kilos this year
Good news is that courgettes are just starting to come on song and just picked these two beauties, left them a couple of days too long.
I love this time of year when stuff starts to happen
