Fantastic spot just down the road

The oppidum of Ensérune near Nissan-lez-Enserune in the Herault is one of the finest pre-Roman Iberian settlements in France, occupied from the 6th to the 1st centuries BCE and providing an extraordinary picture of the culture that flourished in the Languedoc before the Roman conquest.

The site overlooks the extraordinary drained lagoon of Montady. Entry to Ensérune costs around 8 euros.

Those who stand on the oppidum hill and look down at the extraordinary radial drainage channels of the Etang de Montady drained in 1247 describe the combination of the Iberian heritage above and the medieval engineering below as the most intellectually extraordinary and most visually distinctive heritage site available anywhere in the Languedoc plain.
