Last night we accommodated our first newly married couple for their wedding night. The wedding was in Coutances cathedral and the reception was at the Chateau la Salle, just around the corner from us. We are on their accommodation list and so we often have guests or family staying with us, but last night was the first time for the newly married couple - when they arrived (whenever that was) they were greeted with a card, box or chocolates and a small bottle of red w**e which we left in their room. Congratulations and best wishes for the future. ❤️

We have almost an acre of land in it's entirety and although there is a back garden, driveway, front garden, an orchard, nature garden, paths and sitting areas, we keep the majority of it as a wild flower meadow as chemically free to encourage biodiversity. However once a year we have to mow all of it otherwise we will have no wildflowers the following year and brambles will take over - as happened to the lower part of the meadow last year because a sudden turn in the weather meant that we never succeeded in mowing it, which we now have to sort out. It is a fairly big job. We wait as late as we can but also the ground must be dry. Yesterday was a gorgeous afternoon and now approximately two thirds of the meadow is mown ready for Spring next year.

Having waved goodbye to our lovely German guests in the morning, last night we decided to go for a rare evening out to try the new artisan burger restaurant in Coutances, Good Burger, and it was warm enough to sit outside. Just under the shadow of St. Nicholas, Good Burger opened earlier this year. It was very friendly service and nicely served. Freddy (who seems to be asleep for some odd reason!) had a blue cheese burger and I had a Berger (shepherd) burger (it's okay, it didn't have an actual Shepherd in it) We had delicious chicken dippers, chips and sauces, all home made, drinks and dessert, so effectively a three course meal all for under 40€. Then we walked around Coutances a little and finished with a coffee in The Parvis opposite the cathedral. Coutances is just 15 minutes from La Bicyclette Bleue and parking is generally unrestricted and free. ☀️

The entrance hall. This room really is the hub of the home and of the chambres d'hôtes. It is the first room that guests walk into, it is where we serve breakfast and in the cooler months, dinner as well. It leads to the bedrooms for guests and the rest of the house for us. It is where we keep games and there is also an information point for guests with lots of books, leaflets and brochures (there is also more tourist information on our website) It's where Freddy practises the piano and where we sit in front of the log burner on cold crisp winter days or sometimes evenings and where we entertain friends when the chambres d'hôtes is not open - it's the heart of our home.

Our open stable and summer kitchen area. This is where we serve table d'hôtes on warm summer evenings, and where guests can produce a simple meal or a BBQ or just sit and chill on the day bed. ☀️ 😎

is our nearest shop and bar, just three minutes from La Bicyclette Bleue. Run by the lovely Arnaud (who speaks English) and Hélène, there is a very nice bar which opens until 8pm and a shop and depot de pain (bread) which sells a good sélection of fresh produce, groceries, Frozen foods, w**es and spirits etc. There is also a good range of local products which are very popular with our guests - cidre, calvados, local artisan beers, crème cru, pâtes, cured meats, biscuits, soups, tergoule (a slow cooked rice pudding with cinnamon) , cheeses etc. - it's well worth a visit and many four guests return more than once. locaux

For 10€ a year for each of us, we are members of Anglophones Coutances a group of both French and other nationalités who live locally. It's a great way to make new friends at the various activities, some free, others you pay for, there is a day out every month, French lessons, dance evenings, book groups, ten pin bowling evenings, meals and other events, and for many months of the year, there is a free guided walk, followed by lunch if you want it. This walk was in Coutances which is only 15 minutes from La Bicyclette Bleue, during which we went to places and saw views of Coutances that we had never seen before. It was a real eye opener, great fun followed by a lunch in Le Parvis in Coutances.
