Nontron, over the border from us in the Dordogne. A lovely town, home of the knife trade (the Sheffield of the Limousin), the Basic Fit gym, some big supermarkets and great restaurants.
And for us Norfolk folk- it's really 3 dimensional!

đŸȘ° Look who came to Le Moulin!

We were absolutely delighted to host Dr Erica McAlister — entomologist, author, broadcaster and Curator of Flies at the Natural History Museum.

Erica gave us a brilliant talk on the weird and wonderful world of flies, then had a good look around our rewilding project.

And she loved it. ❀

For us, that’s a pretty big deal. We want Le Moulin to be somewhere where wildlife enthusiasts come on holiday, but also somewhere that serious naturalists and specialists want to visit.

We talked insects, rewilding and biodiversity, got on famously — and will be continuing the conversation when we visit Erica at Knepp next month.

Not a bad day at Le Moulin. 😃đŸȘ°đŸŠ‹

Amazing video by of a pool frog eating a european hornet on our pond.
We've been observing this behaviour for several days. But no one believed us, so we took a video of it!

French traditional music appears to have a strangely calming effect on animals. đŸŽ¶

Vladimir hates having his feet trimmed. But put on some pipes and hurdy-gurdy and he’ll stand there and put up with it — just about. 😂

Friends of mine in Norwich noticed exactly the same thing with their baby years ago. We’ve always wondered whether there’s something about the frequencies of the hurdy-gurdy strings and those continuous pipe drones.

Whatever the science, Vladimir seems to approve. đŸ«đŸŽ”

Last night we hosted a showing of The People’s Emergency Briefing on the climate and nature crisis.

The film focuses on the UK, but the issues it explores apply just as much here in Limousin, France, where most of our audience lives.

What really struck me was the conversation afterwards.

People were shocked by many of the facts laid out in the film, but there was also a real sense of relief: relief at having the evidence brought together so clearly, and at discovering that they weren’t alone in carrying the fear and frustration that comes with watching our climate change, nature disappear and political action fall so far short of what is needed.

It turned into a thoughtful, lively and hopeful discussion about what we can actually do.

Now the challenge is to turn that energy into action — and keep the momentum going.

đŸŽ„ This video is me, Heidi Smith, just before the event, talking about climate change here in France.
