🍂 Autumn in the Dordogne is not a season, it's an invitation to taste what's been brewing in summer🍂

From September through December, this valley slows down, glows gold, and reveals a side of France most visitors never see.
Misty vineyard mornings, ancient châteaux thrown open to explore, truffle hunts, beautiful reds but also secret sparkling wines, and long evenings by the fire, this is the Dordogne at its most magical, and our favourite time of year!

Mark your calendar:
🏰 September 19–20: European Heritage Days, FREE access to châteaux, museums and hidden gems across the region

📚 October 10–11: Autumn Book Fair in Prigonrieux, hosted by Phoenix, see phoenixbookcorner.fr
(Get the best deals on international books and fund a good cause)

🍷 October–November: Grain d'Automne wine festival around Bergerac, concerts, tastings and harvest celebrations

🍄 November–December: truffle season begins, our region's best kept secret

OUR NEW BLOGPOST IS OUT!

A Season to Fall Back into: Autumn at La Maison Louverie

The French say: "En automne, la terre se repose", meaning "in autumn, the earth rests," and so should you..

There is a France that still exists, tucked into the folds of the Dordogne valley, where the rush of summer quietly gives way to something slower and far more beautiful. Autumn here does not arrive all at once. It sketches itself in, morning by morning, mist curling low over the vineyards at dawn, church bells marking the hours instead of clocks, the first golden leaves drifting onto stone rooftops that have watched centuries pass. This is a season best lived slowly, and there is nowhere better to live it than at La Maison Louverie.

Our old house wakes up gently in autumn. Mornings begin on the terrace, where the air still holds a soft twenty degrees well into October, coffee in hand, planning the day ahead. We always recommend the Thursday morning market in Lalinde, and the Sunday morning market in Issigeac, both wonderfully local and full of life, the kind of place to find warm croissants, chocolatine, good bread and cheeses from the surrounding farms.

In our orchard, walnuts and figs are yours to pick, free, straight from the trees, the kind of small ritual that makes a holiday feel like a memory before it has even ended.

As the light softens into afternoon, the Dordogne opens itself up to explorers. Wander the cobbled streets of ancient bastide towns, built in the hundred years war and barely changed since. Step into a château on the Heritage Days weekend in September, when doors normally closed to the public swing open, free of charge. Hunt for treasure at a brocante or vide grenier, France's beloved flea markets, where every find has a story. And if you are fortunate enough to be here in the evening, listen for the deer, their haunting mating calls echoing across the valley as dusk settles, a sound unique to this time of year and utterly unforgettable.

Then there is the wine. The Dordogne is famous the world over for its reds, but we will let you in on a local secret, our region also produces a sparkling wine every bit the equal of Champagne, we simply cannot call it that. Join a tasting with Vince and Sue at Dordogne Vineyard Tours and discover why. Pair it, if you dare to step further off the beaten path, with a truffle hunt. Kneel in the earth beside a trained dog with Xavier at Ma Terre Première and unearth your own black diamonds, ready to crown your Christmas table back home.

As evening falls and the terrace grows cool, the house pulls you inside. A fire crackles in the hearth, free firewood is yours all season, and there is nothing quite like settling in with a glass of red or that secret sparkling wine and a plate of local cheese, the day's market finds laid out around you. Soak it in from a warm bath in one of the bedrooms, or simply sink into the quiet, outside on the terrace.

This is not a holiday you rush through. It is a homecoming, to a slower life, re-charge your battery with a richer table, good honoust food, a slower walk, feel the air you breath and re-find that version of yourself you may have almost forgotten. Come find it, this autumn, at La Maison Louverie.

Hottest summer on record.
But we did it again, our change-over is a wrap.
We are exhausted but lifted in spirit:

Our guest this morning said: 'In 30 years we are going on holidays together, we never went back to the same place, but you are the exception.'
And the guest checking-in said: 'We never went to a holiday home that was so complete and well equipped as yours.'

Emoji : feeling😌😇🙌
