Jo Ann from Boulder, Colorado, taking a solo trip around France combining work with catching up with old friends. We met in Vietnam over 30 years ago and had almost lost touch so it was great to host her at Lou Messugo!

🎾 Pickleball Lovers - We’ve Got You Covered! 🎾
Good news! If you’re a pickleball enthusiast, you don’t have to pause your game while on holiday. Lou Messugo is located just minutes from a pickleball court, a fairly rare occurrence in France as the game is still relatively unknown here.
Make the most of our excellent location and friendly local knowledge....

A little bit of a wildlife moment here at Lou Messugo: a couleuvre de Montpellier - Montpellier snake (Malpolon Monspessulanus) eating a gecko for lunch.

I spent a good 15-20 minutes watching this, practically on our front doorstep. Snakes fascinate me. What about you? Do they freak or fascinate you?

It's the last Friday in May which means it's neighbourhood street party time! La Fête des Voisins is an annual national fête designed to bring together neighbours, to reduce loneliness and encourage friendship.

Our impasse has celebrated it since 2010 when the first houses were built. You can read about its origins, and how guests in the gite have taken part, in the comments below.

Do you have neighbourhood parties or celebrate la fête des voisins?

The temperature has shot up dramatically over the last 2 days, the pool is the place to be. The water is a delicious 28°c. I don't think it's ever been so warm in May!

In a bid to be as sustainable as possible we have espoused the movement. This is the 3rd or 4th year we have participated. It's easy, we just don't mow the grass!

"Approximately 97% of flower-rich meadows have been lost since the 1930s, and with them, vital food and habitat needed by wildlife. A healthy lawn with some longer grass and wildflowers helps to tackle pollution, benefits wildlife and can even lock away carbon below the ground." (Plantlife website link below to find out more).

Look what happens to our "lawn". Insects and other creatures love it. We love the wild look. What do you think?

Peonies in the wild - who knew! There's a local hike, about an hour's drive from Lou Messugo, with an unexpected surprise: wild peonies blooming in the forest. I’ve always thought of peonies as cultivated flowers, so seeing them growing freely in the mountains is just magical.

The walk through the forest is beautiful and seeing these gorgeous flowers thriving in the wild made it even more special. A lovely reminder that nature still knows how to surprise us when we slow down enough to notice.

When? Right now is the ideal time to see this spectacle of nature.
Where? In Gréolières les Neiges. Park in the big car park near Le Chalet du Parc Restaurant, take the track behind the restaurant and you'll see the hiking trail signs from there.

The path is called "le chemin des pivoines". It's an easy circular walk about 4km long.
