Happy anniversary to us!
Today was our 35th wedding anniversary. Where have those years gone?
Last year we celebrated with a lovely meal at a very posh restaurant. This year we both fancied a much more relaxed celebration, and decided to have pizza and beer overlooking the river Vienne at St Germain-de-Confolens. It was perfect 😍

Today’s harvest. The summer veg is still going strong - tonnes of tomatoes and ever more courgettes - but the winter squashes are are now also putting in an appearance. Autumn is definitely just around the corner.

This week has seen a huge transformation down by the river.
It's hard to imagine now, but when we moved here in May last year, we couldn't even see the river never mind walk down to it.
Since then, George has done a fantastic job of creating a picnic area, and has now added a path that links to the old 'lavoir' where the local women used to wash their clothes. To complete the project, he is now building a picnic bench,
The weather has turned showery, so the newly planted grass seed should get a good start, and I will be planting some spring-flowering bulbs and wild flower seeds.
I've added a photo of the same area taken in 1930. It's been really lovely to uncover this piece of local social history, and we even even discovered that one of the ladies in the photo is the grandmother of our neighbour Jean-Paul.

I know that some of you are fans of Escape to the Chateau, and are following the latest 'Make do and mend' series, so I thought I would share my latest crafty creations.
Having changed the bedroom names when we refurbished the rooms, we needed some new name plaques. I couldn't see anything I liked, so decided to make my own.
I primed and sprayed the old acrylic door signs, and used decoupage to add the names and decoration . I had been dabbling with decoupage for a while - the plant pots were my first attempt, followed by a lovely afternoon craft course at Chic Créations in Confolens. I've definitely got the bug now, so there will no doubt be a few more transformations coming along soon!

It’s so lovely to be having guests again, and this week we have had three wonderful couples from France and Belgium. I have to say, reading their wonderful feedback is the best possible reward for all the hard work. 😊

Courgette anyone? Yesterday I made roasted courgettes, courgette muffins, courgette and lemon drizzle cake, courgette quiche, plus 4 litres of soup and raw courgette for the freezer. Still they keep on coming!

Exploring brocantes and flea markets is always exciting, and I was delighted to find these 7 identical chairs. Once re-covered they will be perfect for our dining room.

Simple pleasures.
Today we said goodbye to our first post-lockdown guest - our youngest son Elliott. It has been such a joy to relax and have some family time. Much of our time was spent just talking in the garden or whilst walking the dogs around the country lanes, but we did manage a few outings - canoeing in the river Vienne at Confolens and lunching at our favourite riverside cafe ARThé, mingling with the monkeys at the Vallée des Singes and finally back to Confolens for the 14th July celebrations last night. Come back soon Elliott Brown

The best laid plans of mice and men....

This week began with plans to get ourselves ready to re-open our doors to guests. We have been making a few adjustments to enable social distancing, and I have been upcycling some furniture to facilitate this. This post should have featured the completed work, however it didn't quite work out that way. On Wednesday, one of our beautiful Kerry Blue terriers, India, visited the vet for the removal of tumours, including part of her tail removed. She has been quite poorly, so everything else has been put on hold until next week. Until then, India and her sister Loulou have our undivided attention.
