The gardener hasn’t heard about the EU working temp debate. He is performing the annual garden haircut (débroussaillage) in 32 degrees although he did stop for lunch, as all frenchmen must. Meanwhile we continue with the arduous routine of swim, lunch, rosé.

I gather summer in the UK has finished after it made a brief appearance for half-term. Here we have another 3-4 months to go. The temperature has dropped to 28 but it still beautifully warm for an evening swim. We have found another couple of restaurants locally although the village bistrot remains hard to beat.

Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. (Near?!)

Why does the fig start fruiting without having flowered? Why does our lime have fruits a year after it flowered. I am still learning Provence seasons. Lettuce and tomatoes must be planted in the shade, melon and cucumber grow well and vegetable planting must be finished by March. The rosemary by the ramp is flowering and the new step will make pool access easier for Andrew.

And did those feet, in ancient time, walk upon….?
Well, everyone knows the answer to the hymn, but when it comes to the Mediterranean the answer is yes!

We are constantly reminded by vines, figs and oliviers, but at this time of year the sudden flowering of cercis siliquastrum, the Judas tree is a reminder of the Easter story. We rather like to skip the sober part and skip to new life and joy (and also in my case chocolate).
The blue thing (what we call ‘sky’ in Provence,) is not fake. Summer is progressing at breakneck speed, already we are eating breakfast outside if it’s not too early. Which it rarely is.

At last! Something we do so much better than the French. Spring in the UK. Ive remembered why we go back.
Admittedly they are getting ready for summer next week but still…..

Why exactly are we going back to the UK? They dont seem to have the memo about the end of winter. Our neighbours nimosa is spectacular.

Why do we prune olives in February sunshine?
Answer:It gives us the ‘huile d'olive’.

Last year’s harvest yielded less than expected, 93kg, because the crop had ripened early and some had already fallen. More landed on us as we picked. Along with 2 neighbours we sent 350kg off to get our own pressing in our gardener’s 45 year old truck (only 350,000 on the clock). And now we have 17l of oil to share with friends who picked or pruned and our rental guests this summer. Already we have all but two weeks booked.

Olive picking again and Christmas arrives. Our neighbours’ display grows every year and all the locals gather with the mayor to turn on the lights and drink vin chaud. I think they have a better display than Lorgues!
The Olive harvest didn’t fully live up to to earlier promise. About 90 kg so at least 10l of oil but they had ripened early and so ‘déjà tombé’.

Summer is still full on here and we had a wonderful lunch at La voile beach club in Ste Maxime. Great food and a superb view.
