We are a Franco-British couple and after selling our property of 40 years near Nantes, wanted to keep a small holiday "bolt hole" in France. We had always loved the Vendée area and our
careers meant we had many friends there. When we visited this charming maisonette in Saint Hilaire de Riez, we immediately fell in love with all it had to offer. SURROUNDINGS
Ideally situated near the lively port of St Gilles and the scenic coastland of Sion sur mer, Rose Cottage is one of a few small, spaciously spread, typical Vendée style blue and white bungalows, attractively set in a private residential woodland park with swimming pool and sunbathing area (in season), tennis and boules. The "Domaine de la Roseraie"(rose garden), the name of the park, formerly a "colonie de vacances" for French schoolchildren was completely renovated a few years ago. In fact when we bought the property, it was not entirely finished, which gave us the opportunity to put our own contemporary, Franco-British stamp on the interior decoration while keeping its easy, cosy, seaside style. DESCRIPTION
- The south-facing PATIO/private courtyard is equipped with parasol, Vendée blue table and chairs and family size gas barbeque and plancha. A few zero maintenance succulent plants make this area a pure joy for the "evening aperitif" and watching the sun go down.
- The Kitchen/Diner/LIVING AREA has a large dining table which seats 6-8 guests and the brand new kitchenette is fully equipped. Cosy colourful cushions and small details like the knitted tea cosy and teapot give the room a warm inviting feel, adding to the home comforts of this much-loved property.
- The BATHROOM boasts a generous size new shower, heated towel rail/radiator with seaside style fixtures and fittings. A ceiling skylight makes this room pleasant, light and airy.
- The MASTER BEDROOM is equipped with a new double bed, retro bedside tables and lamps. An overhead skylight with blind make the room comfortable and relaxing for star gazing at night yet flooded with sunlight during the day.
- In the SECOND BEDROOM the comfortable bed settee, wardrobes and desk make this room double up as a tv lounge, work or sleeping area for extra guests/children. The two MEZZANINES which give height and a roomy feel to the property are used for storage of our own personal belongings leaving our guests to enjoy the full spacious floor area, which incidentally, is tiled and extremely low maintenance. Ryanair operates flights from East Midlands to Dinard and Manchester to Nantes. It is very easy and convenient to hire a car from both of these airports and after a short car journey arrive in the Vendée. Brittany Ferries sails from Portsmouth to Caen and Portsmouth to Saint Malo. Then it's only a question of a relaxing, free, empty dual carriage car journey to Rose Cottage Vendée. SHOPPING
There are two huge hypermarkets (Leclerc and Hyper U) in St Gilles and Saint Hilaire as well as the local daily markets but if you prefer smaller specialised boutiques, the pedestrian area in St Gilles has lots to offer. All in all we are certain you will enjoy a visit to this friendly, off the beaten track relatively undiscovered area of Western France with the added advantage of a shorter journey and less crowds.
