February: There were quite a few flowers on the lemon trees when, in case of morning frost, we covered them back in December. The Mistral tore one of the covers off this morning to reveal around 20 of these little beauties. They’re now ripening in the February sun. But we’re ready to cover them over again at the first sign of the old hoar !

October: crystal clear mornings and warm afternoons. The Friday farmers market and an al fresco lunch at L’Ami Provençal in Fontvieille, followed by a walk in the rocky hills and pine forests above the market place. Here perch several stone, Napoleonic windmills which stand as silent sentinels over the sleepy village. The most famous of these, in France at least, is “le moulin de Daudet” named after the writer of “Letters from my Windmill”; a collection of short stories which paint an incredibly evocative pastoral portrait of Provence in the mid 1800s. You should read it. If you like that sort of thing.
The nights are much cooler now but not so cold as to prevent our friend Sue ordering huge platters of oysters, bulots & crevettes from L’Ecailler de L’Estagnol in Saint-Rémy for a delicious Friday dinner. Thank goodness those months with an “r” are back. (Oyster-scoffing photos by Pascal)
