Instead, listen to the 2 million annual visitors who head straight for Sarlat every year, the “Jewel in the Crown” 👑 of the Perigord Noir here in sunny south east Dordogne! 😎 There’s good reason why this most magical ✨ of medieval cities that you’ve never heard of 😃 in SW France draws over 2 million visitors annually! 😱 As France’s largest, most fully preserved medieval city, it really is a hidden gem!💎😍

Surrounded by what I call the 4 C’s: Caves 🪨 Chateaux 🏰 Canoes 🛶 and Cycling 🚴‍♀️ 😎 our glorious region is where prehistory started and so we are rich in prehistoric cave dwellings and parietal cave art, some so far deep inside their cave that you have to catch a train 🚂 to transport you 1km deep inside just to see them 😱 and caverns so deep you need to catch an underground boat 🚤 to traverse them 😲 We are surrounded by medieval riverside villages, bastides with castles 🏰 romantic chateaux with beautiful manicured gardens🌳, breathtaking views and scenery, the magnificent Dordogne river where you can take a boat tour 🛥️ on a gabarre or head out for the day on a canoe 🛶 gliding past cliffside villages as you head downstream, not to mention the gastronomy our region is famous for: not just wine 🍷 but truffles 🪨 duck 🦆 foie gras and walnuts so subsequently we have the most fabulous cuisine in all our restaurants 😋

Google “Perigord Noir” (literally “Black Perigord”, “Perigord” is the ancient name for Dordogne) and you will read that all roads lead to Sarlat, how Sarlat is the “Jewel in the crown of the Perigord Noir!” with its 70+ gastronomic restaurants, bars, cafés, shops and the best farmers’ market in the region! 🥖🧀

Ryanair’s route between Stansted and Brive is back on for 2026, from March to October 🥳

This is a second fabulous route into our beautiful region, just one hour east of Sarlat 🛬 And with Bergerac airport just over an hour west of Sarlat, that’s two Dordogne Valley airports you can choose to fly into from Stansted ✈️ Then there’s also Bordeaux airport which is just over two hours from us 🤩

And from Bergerac and Bordeaux there’s also a direct train service from their city centres into Sarlat 🚆
